Only 5 weeks In and my intial Lofty goal feels much closer then I’d anticipated at this point.

And thus, It’s 1000 lb total or nothing, end of June.

I’ve decided to start a Log here to track my progress while I go hard for the first time since I was 18.

Quickly about my training back ground. Started lifting when I was 15 with a serious passion to not be a skinny f*uck. I was 6’3 and 150 pounds when I walked into the gym Went genuinely hard for 3 years. I actually did GOMAD for several months straight and used to set alarms for the middle of the night to wake up and eat a bowl of food to put back some extra calories while I physically could. I have puked between sets at the gym from just being so god damn full. My mobility sucked, my wingspan is about 4 inches longer then my height and my legs are basically proportional to my arms in length, long.

It kinda worked only if you consider where I started, but honestly it was kinda pathetic. I truly believe my hormonal maturity lagged behind many young men until maybe age 20. Not the proudest statement and I’m not even sure how possible that is but my god was it difficult to get stronger. I knew the programs I was supposed to be doing and never F*cked around with any stupid bro splits like the other kids. I had done SS, Stronglifts, and other legit programs with proper progression, I always failed on my lifts within a couple months and was back to deloading, ramping up again. By 18 my 1rms were : 225 squat. 205 bench. 315 dead. I weighed 190 lbs.

The following 5 years I was an extremely inconsistent lifter. with working such physical long hours and just not giving a f*ck anymore.

I’m now 23. 6’3 245 lbs. them damn long limbs started to fill out just a tad over the last 2 years, no beer belly or excessive fat anywhere. I consider myself skinny.

Anyways enough BS. I’m still weak as f*ck and I’ve had enough. I’ve been on it hard for one month and I finally feel the urge again.

My proven 1rms are as follows: 325 deadlift. 245 squat. 210 bench.

My squat is why I cry myself to sleep. It’s always sucked and I’ve always hammered it harder than anything else, 2-3 times a week always so long as I was consistently working out.

Anyways here we go. I took a sh*t load of wieght off the bar to start this routine and I’m gonna ramp that shit up till I die. Doing upper/lower 6x a week I’m basically doing only dead’s,squats, bench and bent over rows. I will do every compound 3x a week on alternating days. I will deadlift only once a week.

I intend to gain weight untill I complete my short term goal of 225/315/405 bench squat deadlift. Definitely going calorie heavy.

March 2. First day of new routine.

Squat 185 5reps 3 sets

Deadlift 315 3 reps 1 set

That’s it. All I did. All I care to do is pump these numbers right now.

Starting low here, I Will intend toprogress at 5lb/ session.

Interested to see where this goes. Mainly because your username suggests that you hunt, and I’ve always found country boys have a good skill for getting that blue collar man strength lol.

Good luck brother, lots of good resources here, so throw up and questions or issues you have and I’m sure someone will point you in a solid direction.

If you are not squatting with a wide stance, I would transition to a wide stance. Your legs are too long to be squatting like short people do (typically).

Starting light is almost always a sign of training maturity around here, so good on you for that.

Very interesting idea.

I have a very bad habit of leaning forward on heavy squats like I’m doing a good morning halfway up.

I’m going to try a wider stance.

It’s always been such a bitch for me just due to some sort of mobility issue that’s hard to explain without trading limbs with someone.

I love it this is why I came here

A big reason for wanting to up my strength is because I do a lot of very heavy backpacking trips in the fall. A 50 pound pack can feel like Imminent death after a few steep miles lol.

Man, nothing helps the ruck like a ruck lol. Great way to get in some conditioning, just throw something heavy in your pack and go walk for 30 minutes. Did this a bunch for some military selections, helped a ton. Just gets your back muscles used to the weight.

And if you bend over when squatting, I 100% agree with @RT_Nomad on the wider stance. He gave me that advice a long time ago, and it may have taken me like a year to follow it, but once I did I noticed some immediate improvements.

Edit: where do you hunt? I mainly did deer in Illinois, so not a lot of backpacking involved for any game. Really want to do some hunts out west, but Ik that’s an entirely different beast lol

I’m out of western Canada not far north of Washington state lines.

I truly am blessed as an outdoors guy here. The public land is so vast and our over the counter tag opportunities are easily the best in the country.

Though I must say some of the western states have incredible opportunities for mountain hunts aswell even for out of state hunters. I watch videos of guys hunting Utah mule deer or Colorado elk and can honestly say we do not have herds like that on this side of the boarder. lots of out of state guys Ive seen can head out for a week and have great odds of success.

Work on form a couple months. I would suggest sets of 10 reps. You are wanting to have the bar move upward at the same rate as your hips rise.

I don’t feel generally bad about my form
Through out the movement, but some factor or another temps me to lean forward when I approach the higher end of my physical strengths. I’ve definitely seen it in guys going for big lifts and I’m sure that you have to and know what I’m talking about.

I would reconsider your expectations. You want to being doing all your reps where you have no form break. You don’t want to learn broken form.

My best example is Charles Bailey (275lb class) who squatted 1,100lbs in a powerlifting meet (also a 2,500lb total). He never did a squat training where he had form break down. He comment was, “I am not training to learn how to miss.”

I, myself, only squatted 495lbs for 2 sets of 10 reps, but could have probably done at least 2 more reps, maybe more. I never had any form break down.

Absolutely outstanding for a BB even with gear. You won’t see almost anyone doing something like that with excellent form outside of elite PL gyms. Rare.

I’d say if you’re stronger with more forward lean, that it isn’t necessarily broken form. That may be your strongest position. Just train all your squats like that.

I wanted to be more upright as a low bar squatter, but I’d just end up bending over more out of the hole. I started descending with more forward lean, then my torso would not get thrown forward out of the hole. At least for me, leaning forward more for the whole rep was the ticket.

And that is not a break down of form. You are just squatting the most efficient form for all the reps (from the start.) That is how you learn to squat the most weight for the most reps.

I am speculating that might be an efficient squat for OP based on what he said. I might be wrong. I think it is worth trying for him though.

I would tend to disagree. The chances that a 6’ 3" guy is squatting his most efficient form is about as close to zero as you can get, unless he has been trying multiple styles.

It took me about 20 years to figure it out, but I was a slow learner. I was just sure that I needed to squat narrow to build my quads. So I did the hips rise, followed by a good morning finish.
