John Keitz, one big dude!
Funny that this came up. Yesterday (mon.) I was leaving a computer lab on campus and had to wait for a very, very large gentleman to manuver his electric cart on to the elevator before I could take the stairs down. I swear that the elevator was creeping as this guy rolled in. He has to weigh 500 lbs or more. From an engineering standpoint, I can’t believe that his cart can support him!
When I see people like that, I feel sorry for them, but can’t help but wonder how the fuck they got that way.
Jeff
Was this show called half ton man?? If so I saw it.
What I’m really curious about is how these people pay for their food. Most could not leave the house and appeared to have spouses that did not work. Yet they eat a tremendous amount of meat. One said he ate 24 pork chops as a meal, 20 hot dogs. It was always a crazy amount of food. Yet they have no income.
I’m also curious why the people that keep feeding them are not liable for abuse. Really it should sort of balance itself out. When you get too fat to get up, you don’t eat for a few days till you can get up.

Maybe food stamps have gotten REALLY generous lately? They could just stand on a streetcorner and beg for frenchfries.
760…I bet he had a hell of a good time getting there!
inkaddict: I completely agree with you. I saw that part also where it took 3-4 people just to turn him over in bed. He also could not breath very well when he was lying flat on his back due to all of that weight.
Todd S.: Guess what, our tax dollars were paying for that guy to continue to eat like he has been doing all of his life. I suspect he had food stamps and I could almost guarantee you that he had Medicare and Medicaid to cover all of his medical expenses. I’m sure he was determined disabled due to his weight (Disability is another thread in itself) and therefore he was on Medicare which is not usually available for some under the age of 65 unless they are on Disability. Well ultimately our tax dollars were funding his existence.
Good thoughts buy everyone.

I’ve already got a problem with the whole wellfare and disability system then to see someone getting huge while on it just blows my mind. I need to get hooked up on this, then I might be able to afford to bulk… LOL.
Just gonna play a little devils advocate here…
I just saw a show on Pittsburgh’s public broadcasting channel about a center in pittsburgh who have a disease where they simply can not feel full, which leads to eating a ton, and, obviously, huge weight gain.
Apparently it is not often diagnosed, which leads to a lot of early deaths, especially in children. They have programs that people can go through, and then for their entire life they need someone to prepare their food for them, and then to make sure the kitchen and refridgerator is locked.
Now, I am not saying that every one has it and that is their excuse, but it is certainly a possibility. Which goes back to the origional poster, saying to get them medically checked for hormonal imbalances.
I wish i could remember the name of the disease, but it escapes me.

Just because you can’t feel full doesn’t mean you must go ape shit and eat everything in the house. I don’t feel full after my meals either, as I imagine most people eating 6+ meals a day don’t. I monitor my calories and make sure that I get the needed amounts.
frisbee:
that medical condition is called Prader-Willi. I do not know if the 760 lb man had this condition as I did not see the beginning of this show but I don’t think he had this condition.

Doesn’t Prader-Willi also cause pale skin and red hair? I didn’t see the 750 lb man, but the half-ton man was dark-haired.
Apparently, to be the subject of these shows, your weight must be a multiple of 250 lbs. Too bad for the 830 lb man.

damn you’re pretty sick.
The sad thing is that half of mankind live below the poverty line and don’t get enough to eat. It seems some of the other half are eating their food!
I have written once on T-Nation before how these sorts of shows are on over here in Japan all the time. They are always about Americans. They purport to be serious but you can tell the Japanese hosts are laughing like crazy inside.
They show what some of these fat losers eat. One family of a mother and her two daughters would completely cover their dining table with food at every meal. I’m talking 20-30 pieces of fried chicken, a gallon jug each of OJ, a loaf of bread each, and a box of donuts. Another guy had not left his house in years. His goal was to lose enough weight to FIT through his front door and walk to his mailbox. After working out with some little chrome dumbells and a little bit of dietary control he lost a couple of hundred pounds and achieved his goal. He celebrated by going on a binge, gaining most of the weight back, and having a heart attack and dying. Pathetically sad.

According to Homer, you only have to reach 300 lbs. to sit on your fat ass and collect disability. I think these guys have lousy insurance companies, if they have to get to 700 lbs, before they can collect.

The sad part is that picture represents at least half of America.
It was an extremely sad show…
On Wendsday, 12/21/2005, Discovery Health plans to air “The 627 Pound Women”.

One wonders if these are meant to be cautionary tales, or merely a modern version of circus sideshow freaks.

Probably a little of both…
