42, Looking for Tips

42 years old, been lifting I was 16. Just wanted to check out this particular forum. I don’t compete except w/ myself. Had L5 disk surgery in 98’, Total left knee replacement in 2015, & just had gastric sleeve surgery in Jan. 17’.
Been over 300lbs since I was 12. My highest weight was 430lbs in July, down to 309lbs now. Had to make some serious lifestyle changes for myself. & my family.
Made some good gains in the gym recently.
Started training Aikido in August. So now my fitness level has increased although some lifts have suffered w/ the weight loss others have gotten better w/ my mobility. Just wanted to say what’s up.
Looking for tips on fitness over 40.

I’m 45 years old. My first tip would be take it slow. You are not 16, 24, or even 35. Recovery doesn’t come as easily and you may find that you need a week to recover form a particular workout. Doing something is better than doing nothing. You’ll make slow steady progress if you find what works for your body and stick to it. For what it’s worth, I crushed my ankle and wrist in 1995. Both are still serious problems. I also broke my knee in that accident though it seems minor my comparison. I had a shoulder surgery (acromionectomy) a few years ago and had to start pushing the bar again…just the bar. You can be in good physical condition if you make the commitment and take just a small amount of time each week.

agree with qfk.

I am near 6’2" and was up to 387lbs about 3 years ago. I’m 47 btw.

Discipline in good nutrition + workout every time = results.
That goes for us all of course.

I’ve been under the knife too, and even one surgery can cause problems with your entire body and your mind.

Personally, I suggest adopting a pure “never give up” attitude about your body if you haven’t already, and it IS yours so it’s up to you how it looks.

Avoid the “latest crazes” like gluten free (still?), Adkin’s, etc. Read up on nutrition here because the articles are golden.

Finally, set your goal(s) for body composition, plan how to achieve it and execute. It’s easy to do the first two but the last is where the rubber meets the road.

Ask questions in this forum because I’m pretty sure the guys here can offer better advice for those of us who are “seasoned.”

I recommend looking at articles here by Christian Thibideau. There’s a forum for him as well…he gives advice from a longevity perspective too.

I’ve just started his program titled, “The Best Damn Workout Plan for Natural Lifters” and it makes a ton of sense. Six days a week at about 35 mins per day, covers all the muscles.

Best of luck and keep us posted.
