Ok, for those who don’t think it’s that much of an accomplishment; Strap enough weight on yourselves so that you weigh 400 lbs, then walk for 10 hours. Or, one of those fat suits that actors wear sometimes.
That is a tremendous accomplishment. A world record holder in one sport that requires mass and then competes in a different where the skinnier the better and he still accomplishes the goal. Amazing determination. Very impressive.

he finished a half marathon in 1:09 after shitting himself, thats pretty badass
comparing him to a 400lb slob is redonk
A 10 hour marathon is about as awesome as benching the bar 10000 times by a 100lb guy. Still stupid

What you’re expecting out of a 400lb guy who completes a marathon would be like putting that twig of a shit covered runner in a sumo wrestling tourney and expecting him to do even remotely well. It’s just not going to happen.

This. That’s why it’s a fucking stupid idea in the first place.
Believe me I’m not in any way ‘in awe’ of his ‘great’ time.
I just think the guy had balls to get out there and move his weight, however slow, such a distance. I understand that that time is at a slow walking pace, but how fun can it be to walk for ten hours at 400 pounds?
I’ve struggled with 50K hikes before. Granted I was doing the distance much faster than this guy but I also weigh less than half of what he does.
The pain in his knees and feet alone are enough for me to admit the guy had some cojones.

Seriously!
I remember when I started running as a fatty. THAT WAS FUCKING HARD. It’s so easy now. Effortless. But wheezing and gasping and flapping around, I am not sure how I did now lol. I see people starting out and I know they probably feel like they suck but it really is so much harder when you’re new and out of shape, especially if you’re fat.

I cannot imagine you as a fatty. When you say fatty, are you talking about skinny-fat with a little weight to lose? Or are you talking about a landwhale being worthy of a harpoon?
You have always been a straight shooter Deb, so is this you overexaggerating here?

I can’t agree any more. I don’t think most people have any idea what 400 lbs feels like. I got to 350 and couldn’t stand it… because I couldn’t walk to a lecture hall 5 minutes away without getting winded.

Don’t make me post my fatty pic! =D[/quote]
Don’t make me twist your arm, or gnaw on your gorgeous leg. Yep, I think I will go with gnawing on your leg.
I guess the thing that boggles me about this guy, clearly he has the fortitude to accomplish alot, so how the hell did he get to 400 lbs? The ball dropped somewhere for him, what/when/why is the question I have.
It’s like Rulon Gardner on the Biggest Loser, that sumbitch is running at 12 mph on a treadmill at nearly 350 lbs, when did the sky fall for these people?

My dad was well over 300lbs (maybe close to 400 at times, but I’m not sure) but he was a hard working man with a strong will and ability to work and accomplish things. He managed to drop most of the fat several times in his life, he was a boxer at one time and would pick up pieces of diesel engines and air compressors (industrial machines, not residential) like they were nothing when my large, muscular brother could not make them budge without a hoist. Created his own business and worked like a dog at it.
He didn’t make it a priority to lose fat most of the time but he could have if he wanted to. He just didn’t want to. But he could accomplish a lot when he wanted to.

For like the ninety thousandth time in this thread, he’s a professional SUMO WRESTLER.
I thought this quote from an article said it pretty well:
“A marathon is a race. 26.2 miles is a distance. You can’t call this bit of lumbering around Los Angeles a marathon any more than you can call a walk across the street and back a 100 meter dash,” Mark Spence wrote on the Fabulous Forum blog.

im pretty sure i read that he put on the weight after he got married, then tried sumo wrestling and liked it, got really good, and kept the weight. i could be wrong though.

Spence does have a point, in that there’s an assumption that a Marathon is run, not walked. Most people go along the street at 3 miles per hour.
Still it’s great what the sumo did, but if I were him, I’d tell people “I walked 26 miles!” instead of “I did a Marathon!”
Myself, the longest I’d ever done is a half-Marathon. I’ve done 3 in my life, with the fastest one being 1:54. I was about 220lbs then.
At my current weight, 255lbs, I’ve done a 53minute 10K.

WOW!!! this is huge.
although I do not think you were ever a huge person, it is good to get someone who was larger to comment on how it would have been.
off topic. Deb, what are you hauling in your avatar? is it a kayak?
