305 x 5 Squat - Critique Please

To Challer:

Thanks for taking the time bro. The 5/3/1 intrigued me when I read about it a while back. I will revisit the articles and do some research. I’m in an intense military training program at the moment so this is not a low stress time for me. Shieko and Smolov out for now. Body weight squats sound like a great idea. I guess it reinforces the right groove. I think one of my problems is that I’m not controlling my breathing/core-tightness like I should. This might be affecting my load transfer from upper to lower body. Anyway, I’ll keep at it. Look out for my 365X5 progress video next year. Thanks again.

Coach Bear:

I see what you mean about the “snap.” I never thought about it that much, but you’re right, it means that I’m not all that tight and in control. Those are VERY respectable gains within 8 months man. Thanks for sharing your shieko experience. The program just has a certain mystique about. I will try it one of these days.

Wow, thanks for the compliment about my depth. If you weren’t joking about showing it to your kids, of course you have my permission. I actually take pride in my squat depth. Gains come slow, but the muscle activation that comes with it is totally worth it. I will work on that “snap” and my setup technique. This was a very helpful post gents, thanks.

not a problem. good luck!

Rippin job on that last rep. That was all sack and guts. I just did this very set today for me and I got 315 for 5 reps and it was fuct. last rep was less-than optimal. I didn’t wear my belt though. I think I’ll try for 335 next week.

You got 365x1 for sure. I bet my sack you got 340x1 in you next week. pick a good day and test buddy. You got that shit.

In other news: As for the form on the concentric I think you got the right idea going but just arent used to the weight. The real pattern of your concentric would be better critiqued at about 75%of 1RM. After scoping your 75% then we can say that you either are congruent with the hips and knees or not.

Then from that we look at this set and see where you are weak in the pattern. Personally I would say dont be afraid to ride the knees out over the toes if you are just into raw lifting. If you ride those knees out your can generate quad power from the bottom and get the knees and hips kicking simultaneously.

I’m not so sure breathing pattern is as important as I once thought it was… I used to be a "in on the descent, out on the ascent’ kinda Guy, but over the years, I’ve seen successful lifters with all KINDS of breathing patterns… now I just tell them to ‘BREATHE!!’… the whole litany for the squat in My weight room goes like this… of course we’re out of the rack at this point…

"head up!!
"chest up!!
"hips back!! {{I tell them to sit down and back like they’re looking for the toilet in the morning… SEEMS to keep them from tipping over}}
"GET YER ASS DOWWWN!!!
"chest up!! {{they’ll forget that as they start to push out of the hole…}}
"STAND UPPPP!!!
"stay still!!! {{I treat every max attempt like a powerlifting meet max… helps them hold steady when it matters…}}

and no… I"m not joking… have your thread bookmarked Home and school… just have to figger out how to get it to show… school puters don’t like you tube much where I am… but I’ll get it…

have a great night,

Coach Bear

Squats look really good! I’ll know in two weeks when I go for 300lbs on my 5/3/1+ day if you’re very far ahead of me. :slight_smile:

Based on this comment, yes Sheiko and Smolov are not options for you. 5/3/1 would be doable. It can be adjusted in a number of ways and still stay “true” to the program. In your case I’d recommend something like a conservative training max.

To use your 365lbs squat as an example, most people would use 90% (or 330lbs) as the training max, in your case 85% (or 310) would likely be better. A couple other options are to limit the lifting to 3 days a week rather than the 4 and using primarily bodyweight exercises for the assistance work (Jim’s mentioned he does this himself at times).

If you decide to do it, then think of these adjustments and post a question in the 5/3/1 part 2 thread (mentioning the intense military program), and Jim will likely respond with his thoughts.

Coach Bear, I know there are add-ins for Firefox web browsers that can save videos directly off the net onto your hard drive.

way to grind out the reps man. looks great!!!
