There is a HUGE difference in what these guys did to prepare for “300” and what Pitt did for “Fight Club”.
I don’t think there is a “hate” for Pitt…but for YEARS after “Fight Club”, people couldn’t seem to get it through their thick heads that what Pitt did to prepare was:
Chain Smoke
Eat hypocaloric
Do TONS of cardio
Bang Jennifer Aniston
Repeat
Pitt is one of those guys with a naturally lean physique who could (at the time) appear “ripped” just by eating less and smoking.
THESE guys in “300”, however, seemed to have had their asses kicked by a hardcore group that SEEMS to not take any prisoners OR just anyone for a client:
So when the questions come “How do I get ripped like the guys in “300”?”(because it will surely happen)…the answer will be:
Say what you will. Brad Pitt’s the fucking man, and a damn good actor.
He’s OK. I don’t have a problem with him but I thought he was weak in troy. His “accent” just didn’t fit at all.
He can’t hold a candle to Russell Crowe. That man is a brilliant actor.
Orlando Bloom sucked. The rest of the cast was very good. It was a decent movie but not great.
Russel Crow is this generations John Wayne, except he’s from down under and is a better actor. Crow should have won an Oscar for “Beautiful Mind”.
Between the boxing movie and Gladiator (and punching out paparatzi), he’s this generations “he-man”. Bloom is a puss. I gotta give Pitt his props. I like his movies and he’s got some decent muscle on him. His fight with Hector, you gotta admit, was really well done. Still, nothing beats Crow “ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED??!!!” after hacking to pieces 10 opponents at once and then spitting a big, bloody wad on the ground.

Troy doesnt deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as Gladiator and Braveheart. Troy is so very UN-manly that it sucks testosterone out of you as you watch.
I can’t even watch Troy all of the way through. I just can’t get over the “boy band” cast. That said, this movie was sick. Seeing a leg get cut off in slow motion just kind of touches you in that warm place you only reserve for blood baths and nude scenes with huge titties.
I just saw 300. I think it freaking rocked. I also have to place it up there in my movie list. It doesn’t make number one, that is and will always be reserved for Terminator 2.
I was very impressed with the physiques and the look of all the spartans. I think they did a good job casting, and putting some MEN on the screen. If I would have seen Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matthew Mcwhatever playing bad ass spartans I would have walked out of the theatre.
Have you seen History of Violence? There is one very similar scene in the movie with the main characters son. If you haven’t seen it you should check it out.
300 was like taking the combined highlights of every non-firearm war movie, turning up the volume, bass, gain, brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation, and looping it for 2.5 hours.
This was one HELL of a movie. It’s easily a Testosterone movie. After I watched it I either wanted to go kickboxing or go to the gym. The resolve of the Spartans was incredible and the way the whole film together was awesome. The fight scenes turn your adrenalin on full blast.
Went to see it again with my Dad this time…he was crying he liked it so much. (I knew it would be too gory for my mom)
The second time is not a let down by any means. CGI or whatever, the scenary and choreographing was absolutely amazing.
As far as the physiques…i agree, there will be about 50 questions regarding how to get it. Hell I called a good buddy who does nutrtion counseling and said that is the new goal…f a 500lb bench.
I remember about a year ago, my storyboard instructor would bring in class story boards and conceptaul arts that he was working on for an upcoming movie. Ignorant at that time, I wasn’t paying too much attention exept for the fact that it was an epic about the the greeks. I just realized a few minutes ago after reading this thread that the movie he was working on turned to be 300.
I usually wait for the dvds but it would be pointless to watch this movie on dvd. Hopefully I can catch it on Imax.
While I agree that 300 was indeed very badass, I disagree in the sense that it was better than Gladiator. Perhaps it was the anticipation leading up but I can remember seeing Gladiator the day that it opened and being blown away…one of the few movies I have seen in my life that actually made me feel that way.
Maybe I was more impressionable in my youth but I think Gladiator worked on more levels whereas 300 was a one trick pony(the subplot with the queen/mcnulty from the wire traitor thing lacked any of the deceit/desperation that the similar Commodus’ sister/senator Gracus storyline from Gladiator achieved, no I am not stoned)
All of that being said if someone were to ask me to see it again I do not think I would hesitate…the ending was sick!
I went to see it with my son and 6 of his buddies (17-19 year olds). 5 min out of the theatre and we’re pumped talking shit and the usual badass stuff we get in the van and as I’m driving, a car nearly hit us by not making a stop, then the driver “high beams” us.
We stopped at a stop light the guy then turns off his high beams and when the light changes he passes us quickly and all the “kids” in the car are giving the guy the finger and yelling “This is SPARTA!” it was funny, I just ignored the guy shaking my head and laughing inside thinking about what would happen if the guy egg’ed us on to “get out of the car”.

F*********CKING SWEEEET! I saw it in IMAX at midnight Friday, and loved it. It is without a doubt, the epitome of manliness.
No it doesn’t, and no it isn’t.
Overblown, exaggerated, and it gave you no reason to give two fucks if Sparta burned. The only identifiable character was Leonidas- all the others were nameless.
Spartan freedom? Show us where it was… give us a reason to care that the persians were trying to overtake it. Some cool battle scenes, but the CGI kind of takes away from the feeling. The ending is cool, though, with the Spartans on the plains.
It was interesting, don’t get me wrong, but I’d have been alot happier if I’d seen it on HBO as opposed to paying ten bucks at a theater.
Gladiator, Braveheart, and Troy still kick this movie’s ass though.
Okay we get it. You are the young rebel who has a deep appreciation of history and literature. That being said this movie kicked Troy’s ass! If you can forgot the actual history, the fantasy parts, and wanting a long boring build up to make me cry for Sparta, and appreciate a good old Testosterone infused battle movie this is it.
King Leonidas was a complete and total badass warrior as were his men. This as far as movies go was head and shoulders above Troy. The only guy I liked in Troy incidently was Hector played by Eric Bana. I liked this more then Gladiator as well.
