I wouldn’t count out a lot of Christian votes swinging to someone NotTrump. With Stormy, his complete inaction on abortion, and already shaky footing with religious folks, I know a few people who’ve already said they can’t support a man like this.
Not saying they’ll remember that when election day rolls around and the dirty socialist Dems MUST be stopped at all costs again, but I’d bet a contender could do damage. Ask H.W.
I really don’t think so. He was already a thrice divorced asshole bully who advocated sexually assaulting women. And said the most creepy things about his daughter.
Evangelicals voted for him in record number. Paying off a prostitue won’t bother them if none of the above did. The 2016 election showed us one undeniable fact. Evangelicals don’t care how someone behaves. They will vote for any Republican.
Most of this can be hid behind the ‘le media’ spin though. So the lesser of 2 evils factor really shined in making sure Trump didn’t lose that much of the religious vote.
Now you’ve got an actual affair right after the birth of his child and absolutely no movement on abortion. It was a big deal to people that put value in that stuff.
Edit: and maybe most importantly, no HRC
Wouldn’t Weld be running as a Republican? Seems to fit the checkbox for me.
Plus another candidate isn’t viable, but they’re amazingly effective as creating infighting (ala Bernie v HRC) and messing with voter turnout.
I dunno evangelicals went for him in the primaries where it would be hard to argue that any other pick might have been closer to what they claim to stand for
Well, it’s not going to be Bill Weld then. He’s pro-choice…though I don’t think there’s a snowball’s-chance-in-hell Trump hasn’t paid for an abortion himself at some point. The man bare-backed a porn star ffs.
Was being a ‘dealmaker’ not a DEFINING metric of why he got elected?
Not doing something beneficial with a full GOP Congress and potentially supportive SCOTUS is one thing, making virtually no public attempt or comment is another.
The end result is the same, so I don’t fault him for not wasting his time, but some anti abortion folk see it as not caring about the issue. The GOP set such a high standard for the constant public attack on abortion.
How many times does "has (had) the full Congress have to be thrown in the conversation, when GOPe / RINOs (especially leadership) and other assorted Never Trumpers were opposed to every action, with the same frequency as any died in the wool Dem?
Add in a “conservative” Justice Roberts and a continued enabling of circuit court judges making Federal statutes viz the Judiciary.
Every time. That’s kinda the point of branding yourself the ultimate dealmaker that nobody can possibly hang with.
I mean is there something else Trump was supposedly good at?
I feel like that was supposed to kinda be his thing. And in return his supporters looked past things like draft dodging and not understanding how politics works or that healthcare is hard.
Deal making means that both parties come to the table and do some give and take.
Reagan/O’Neill and Clinton/Gingrich for example.
Name any person (particularly with whatever your vision of perfect morality, to take this out of the equation) that could 100% satisfy both sides of any issue with diametrically opposed positions. Being GOP is not some magic label that transforms the person into a Trump clone.
Given deals really aren’t being made, what makes you think it’s because Trump isn’t willing to give as much as he’s trying to get? That’s kinda his life story.
Agreed. Fundamentally impossible. But that’s why politics requires compromise to get work done. Maybe I’ve missed it, but we’ve seen very little compromise from Trump.
I know. I’m speaking directly about Trump ala 2020 POTUS race thread
Think like Trump man. People are saying you’re the best fisherman ever. That’s just what everyone says. They say you catch the bigliest fish ever. Believe me.
Cross your fingers. The uberpetty shit seems to be doing wonders to give AOC free (good) press. Let’s hope they’re this helpful with the rest of the players
