Yeah I can see what you mean. Perhaps it just that the right paints it as a leftist thing… at least that’s why it resonates in my mind. You back that up with factually they are democrat run areas and it make sense when you shoot from the hip.
Agree, and it works on a lot of people. Stuff like that is a political slam dunk. I don’t think I would have caught it a few years back.
I don’t know. It’s like, I’m allowed to call my buddy a dumbass, but when some random dude calls him dumbass, I’ll get pretty fired up.
You might be right. It might have been stupid as I originally thought, or it might have been a smart move. All that 4D chess talk has me probably reading into his words more than justified.
I think Trump definitely scored some points on his attacks over the riots, etc. He had some good attacks overall, I just think he ruined the effective attacks with a lot of really bad ones and interruptions. He did pull out some facts and figures that I didn’t think he would be able to remember. And he did well to keep the mantra “greatest economy in the world” , “greatest country on earth” etc.
It’s probably more personal for me since that is a pet peeve of mine lol. But even though I know there are going to be interruptions and arguments it aggravates me when it’s basically a shouting match and blatantly rude.
Just house style. We generally avoid stuff like that. A few bits on titles may slip through here and there, but it’s not typically the way we swing. Just like we tend to remove “please”, “thank you”, and “quick question about…” from titles, too.
I don’t think they changed any minds either. It was pretty much what I expected.
I will give Biden props for surviving the time and duration of the debate, I thought he exceeded (albeit low) expectations.
Trump dominated, as expected but there were places he could have done better. Biden did better than I thought he would, which is good for him.
Wallace, I am not sure about. I think he should have let them go after each other a bit more. I think he was trying to hard to control it, while going in knowing Trump is really in control and he’s going to do what he wants. Wallace did do a good job checking his emotions, but I thought he should have allowed them to go back and forth for longer. Let it play out naturally.
He had a lot of interruptions in 2016 too, but a difference I am seeing is that people seem (my perception) to think this time he was being a jack ass. Last time I didn’t hear this. Is there a difference between interrupting a woman, or specifically Hillary that doesn’t get people as upset as interrupting a man or Biden specifically?
I watched some parts of the debate and it made me very happy not being an US citizen.
I mean, absolute disgrace.
I disagree here. I think as many others have said, that Wallace should have had mute buttons for each mic. I would have like to see it be a more formal debate.
That’s was not a proper political debate. High school students can do better.
I didn’t do debate in HS, but I don’t think it is all that similar to a political debate in the US. I think in HS debate you will get burned alive if you use a lot of obvious fallacies in your arguments. That is almost the whole argument in political debate.
Political debate in the US is closer to a rally, but unfortunately the other guy is also doing his rally in the same room.
Yeah. It probably depends which kind of debates are trained in HS. There’s a difference in the rhetoric/semantics you can train to fight the opponent and the validity of the arguments used. And sure, you can’t mix the dynamics of scientific and political debate, no doubt.
But even with only debating skill considered, that was not too good performance. Some of your politicians are really skilled debaters. I had no high hopes at the start with these two, but still they managed to do worse than expected. Basically just insults and interruptions.
Fuck me, Lincoln-Douglas that was not.
So the expectation was that Biden would slip up a lot. It has been part of the Trump campaign to make it seem like he has lost it mentally. That narrative partially worked, but resulted in many having very low expectations of Biden. He did better than many including myself expected. So he didn’t do great, but exceeded expectations. The Trump plan backfired IMO.
I never bought the bs that he would be incompetent senile, but he was below the standards I’ve used to see in high level politics of most countries I’ve followed. I don’t blame him thought, its hard to make good cool arguments when other is interrupting you every 5 seconds or so. It might be that Biden should be held as a winner not getting too awful. Lets say that.
PS. I need to add, that this debate is in theme with current global trend of deteriorating political rhetorics . Trump just pulls it off in a whole new level.
I think someone who had the public speaking skills of Bill Clinton in the 90s would have shredded either of them.
Well, we agree to disagree. Mute buttons are a bad idea, ideologs would abuse that power. It had zero chance of being a ‘formal debate’ it was going to be a brawl from the start and it was.
And how many people watch high school debates? No one, because they are boring.
I prefer the spectacle, it’s much more entertaining. I have seen plenty of presidential debates from Reagan forward and it was always the same. “blah, blah, blah.” “Well, actually blah, blah, blah”, “Well sir, blah, blah blah.”
This bull in a china shop approach is far more entertaining. ‘Screw the fake formalities, we’re going at it!’
Sure, if politics are meant for entertainment. I prefer Netflix for that.
I don’t care much about formalities, but I want to hear intelligent, skilled and fact based discussion. Specially when there is so powerful political seat as a price.
PS. You’re not completely wrong about the entertainment value though, but that’s a very cynical road to go, so I’ll let that be.
