2019 NFL Thread

They do if they think it’s a generational talent like Mahomes looks to be. The simple fact is he was the number 3 qb on a lot of draft boards. Probably much more than the ones that had him as number one.

It’s just really easy now to say you shoulda drafted Pat! But basically everyone had Trubisky as the top QB. These things happen and it’s way too easy to look back after you see how someone plays in the NFL to say well you should have grabbed this guy.

Doesn’t make it easier on Bears fans but people miss out on studs all the time.

Funny and my new favorite song ever. Sorry when I come around by Green Day. Don’t get me wrong we will still blow it in the playoffs. Andy Reid will get bitten by a West Nile mosquito towards the end of the 2nd quarter and the Patriots will score 56 points in the second half to win by 1 as the whole team can’t stop being sick or something.

I’m really confused by your sweeping generalizations.

Personally, I talked to a Cowboys fan who said he thought that when Chicago traded up in that draft, they were looking to get DeShaun Watson.

I find it interesting that many didn’t know who Mitch Trubisky was prior to this season, but now all but convinced he’s the clear-cut #1 QB

5:15 AM - 13 Jan 2017

From a NY Giants fan site:

Big Blue View - 28th overall

The Giants have finding Eli Manning’s successor “in the back of their minds”, but there also doesn’t seem to be a rush to make it happen this year. It’s unlikely that they take a quarterback at 23rd overall, but if Trubisky happens to fall that far, they might reconsider.

It’s not sweeping generalizations he was ranked ahead of Mahomes in virtually all experts rankings.

This has mahomes 3 and says Trubisky is the clear number 1.

Same thing.

“But, Mahomes is sixth on this list for a reason. That great arm got him into a lot of trouble. He makes Brett Favre look like a game manager by comparison at times. You could put together 10-minute reel of awful decisions from his 2016 season alone. Some are just inexplicable.

His mechanics may be even worse than his decision-making. He got away with it in college, but you can’t leave gimme throws on the field, and Mahomes does that far to often because of lazy footwork.”

This has Mahomes 8 and Trubisky one yet again.

SI was the only major site I found that had Mahomes higher than Trubisky and many sites didn’t even have him top 3. Far easier to find people having Trubisky 1 than Mahomes in the top 2.

If I remember right Trubisky came up a bit late but from what I’ve seen the vast majority of places had him as the highest ranked with Watson the next closest. Hindsight of course he’s the worst of the 3 but going in Mahomes was consistently thought of as behind him.

Our biggest paper had him as number 4 which may have been part of the reason KC sports stations in the days after we’re a bit grumpy we went with Mahomes.

Maybe that word doesn’t mean what I think it means.

By happenstance, I randomly clicked on one of your links, a USA Today thing (very expert) -they had Trubisky 2nd, DeShone Kizer (WHO?) first. Come on, man.

I’ll give you the scenario that Trubisky was the “consensus” top QB. But not “everyone” thought so, not even your link.

Emory Hunt, the guy/scout who’s tweet I linked earlier, talked about Trubisky as one of those “safe” picks GMs like to make so that if it doesn’t work out, they don’t get ripped apart by the critics and lose their jobs. Which is exactly how it’s playing out right now…

Dave Gettleman of the Giants, who everybody loves to hate, stuck his neck out to draft Daniel Jones. When a pick like Jones doesn’t work out, there’s no “but, but, everybody agreed he was the best available blah blah…”

Kizer (qb from Notre dame) was ahead of Mahomes on a few. As for the expert thing I don’t know who you think is an expert or not. Seems to me like USA Today would be better than a random giants site but whatever. I picked the first 5 google links and they said similar things. I’m sure if we kept going they would tell the same story. Change everyone to most everyone if you prefer. Very rare for all to agree but as you said the Bears went with the consensus number one.

Isn’t the safe play to always take who the vast majority of people think is the best though? Just because something is safe doesn’t automatically make it bad.

True and he will be blasted by all if the quarterbacks picked after him are great and he sucks. I don’t think they deserve more credit for picking someone they thought was the best just because he was ranked behind others. That’s why you evaluate your own people.

Don’t get me wrong I’m the biggest Mahomes guy out there. Rushed to Hyvee to pick up his fucking cereal just to keep the box. I just think it’s a bit lazy for people after a few years to point at drafts and say “you could have had this guy!!!” Wouldn’t be any different if they picked Mahomes and Trubisky ends up being a star and Mahomes was the “bad” things everyone said. Every team has picks that have turned out the exact same way.

That may be true, but he has looked much sharper passing this year than last year.

Mahomes is benefiting from a system that suits him and plenty of weapons. It’s too bad that other teams can’t seem to figure that out. They keep trying to fit a guy into their system instead of building a system for their guy.

So did Brady in the early 00’s - point is the kid has plenty of upside and will get plenty of reps to improve and strengthen his game if he so chooses. For him, barring injury, the sky’s the limit…

I think it’s great. I feel bad for the “busts” in the league who were put into unwinnable situations and then pushed out of the league for being a failure. The QB can’t succeed if no one is open or he doesn’t have time to throw the ball.

'tis true … There’s a steep learning curve as well in the NFL and I’d imagine it’s VERY difficult mentally to adjust to that - especially at such a high profile position as QB. I hear physically/atheltically CB is the hardest position to play, I’d think QB is the hardest mentally to play. Very very few people can go out there and consistently put in a winning performance … and when they don’t “they’re washed up…” - You see that type of shit ALL THE TIME with MVP caliber players when they have off weeks or w/e - Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Rothlisberger, whenever there’s a dip in their play they’re washed up has beens who might as well have never laced up the cleats. I can’t imagine being a nobody up and comer and having to deal with that ON TOP OF trying to prove yourself with as much scrutiny they are put under …

Their defense didn’t look bad in the previous game against Cam. I’m a huge Giants fan and thought that starting him against the Bucs was going to be tougher than people thought. I never imagined he would put up 4 TDs!!

Think Josh Rosen, he’s in a terrible team situation again this year. I wouldn’t be surprised if he stinks it up this year because of the terrible team and is a second string QB next year again.

Dan Marino. Guy was a generational talent on sub par teams. Still put up okay numbers.

For sure. I mean he’s playing with one of the greatest offensive play callers and possibly the greatest quarterbacks coach of all time.

Ever heard of a Black Swan? Because Dan Marino would be a Black Swan

That doesn’t change that he is doing what very few if any can. Throwing big throws without stepping into them. Throwing accurately across the body, looking one way, and throwing completely the other direction. Throwing left handed when necessary.

That supports your argument though right? Guy put up 420 touchdowns and got zero rings out of it. Proof that even an elite quarterback can’t drag a failure of an organization along behind him.

I saw some clips of him recently. That release though.
