Our defense was alright. Butler gave up some big plays to Brown, but I think he did his job pretty well in general for the first game against an elite WR.
For a second year undrafted player to do what he did last night against arguably one of the top 3 wideouts in the league right now, and a top 10 QB throwing to him… It’s hard to complain. Even the garbage time touchdown he was inches away from breaking that up. 8 weeks from now, he picks that ball off.
That said, this D isn’t near good enough (yet) to make a playoff run. If they can improve, a lot. The pats might have a chance.
Re: me watching. Can’t boycott. My daughter loves watching games with me. (Mainly because of the jumping around and yelling, etc.) And my buddies have superstition that involves me. That said, the passion is gone. I am totally a casual fan, and this headset nonsense… The NFL is now the WWF/WWE. It’s a total joke.

Brady takes random guys to the playoffs every year, he is the goat.
Yep so does P Manning and I am pretty sure that A Rogers could also.
4 > 1
You give Manning, McGinnist, Seymour, Law, Harrison and that bunch, and give Brady whatever group Manning ended up with and those numbers are easily reversed. As far as careers, I will agree that Brady has had by far the best career. Sheer ability to singularly effect the outcome of a game goes to Manning no question however. Belichik has been more valuable to the Patriots than Brady easily.
To further my point, without Brady the Patriots of those Superbowl appearances were an 11-5 team. You think Matt Cassell would have went 10-5 with the Colts?

D didn’t look great. But in the current state of the game, SB’s can still be had with lackluster D. Defenses are handcuffed to the point that offenses are going to get their breaks regardless. The days of the shut out D are all but over. Seattle is making it work right now but give them time and they will start PI’ing them to death to increase offensive production for entertainment value. Enough teams haven’t started copying the mold yet.

Russell Wilson, imo, is the perfect example in todays NFL of a player who gets glory being on a stacked team.
Here we go again with the Russ Wilson hate. Thing is, it kinda reflects an unsophisticated understanding of the pro game. Take this pass play, for instance - NFL Football Highlights, Clips & Analysis | NFL.com
Amateurish viewers likely see a broken play that ends up in an unremarkable completion down the sideline.
Meanwhile, savvier viewers would note the pre-snap look (and what Wilson took from it) and that Wilson actually turned his back to the line of scrimmage (after the blitzing ILB helped free up the DE) before setting and throwing an absolute strike (yes, there was air under it but it’s still to the sideline, and this is the pro game where EVERYONE is FAST) to a WR who definitely wasn’t open when he threw it… but to a spot where it wouldn’t likely be intercepted either.
That is straight up elite-level QB’ing right there… though the majority likely missed it.

I am a little confused here. Was that entire post a joke, or are you being serious? Do you actually feel that was an elite qb play right there? Does anyone else in this thread think that was an elite level play?

I think the D will come along. Lots of changes this year. Butler CB1, CB2/3 a rotation between one returning player and two FA’s, Easley was an injured rookie DT last year, Brown looks like he can be a dominant rookie DT, FA JS as a nickel rusher, etc. It will take some time to gel, but I think Butler should surprise people and the front 7 will help the back end more.

Haha. I am sorry but I find this very hard to believe. If you were a casual fan last night, big IF, give it a couple of weeks. Haha
I don’t know man… I expected to get the nerves and get all excited with every score, etc. It just wasn’t there.
We’ll see, maybe you’re right.
Maybe, I am wrong too. Because, that post made me think you just might be serious.
I will say that after 34 years of being a fan I have so much going on with my private life and work that this is the first year I have not had the “excitement” that I used to have.
Maybe Beans is just not geared up just yet.

Completely serious and you’re making my point: that casual fans would see nothing at all remarkable about that play.
This reminds me of this thread some years back, when I was pointing out that then-NYJ QB Sanchez was very limited in arm strength, awareness and overall upside at the NFL level. This was after him leading them to two straight AFC title games.
I also cited NFL Films guru Greg Cosell’s observations (because he knows his stuff and us civilians couldn’t access All-22 film then) of Sanchez… except that nobody wanted to hear it. I think the NYJ fans even got pissed at me, prob that whole “shoot the messenger” kind of deal. Funny stuff.

I feel just the opposite as you do here. I think of someone not knowing much about the game and watching that play going “WOW, did you just see that play Wilson made”
And anyone who has any knowledge of the game seeing multiple things he did on that play that are far from elite level status.
So we can just agree to disagree on that one.
I would appreciate anyone else who thinks that was a elite level play by Wilson to call me out on it.

I wouldn’t call that an elite level play. I’d rather say that what Wilson did there was an insane degree-of-difficulty play that required both elite athleticism and ability. And that nearly all of that would’ve gone unnoticed by most (but not those FOX broadcast guys who couldn’t help but gush)
Against nearly every other QB in the league, CAR either sacks the QB or forces the incompletion. Actually, Romo would be another QB who could’ve made that play and that’s prob it. And I wouldn’t call Romo a game-manager QB either.
