2011 NBA Playoffs

WF, you’ve played ball at higher levels than I have. I’m curious if you know why so many NBA players seem unable to finish with their opposite hand, it was one of the first things I learned when I was a kid.

Can someone explain to me in plain english why Deng was guarding LeBron 35 feet from the hoop last night even as LBJ routinely blew by him? I was screaming at my tv.

I’m with ya. Bulls and Mavs… with the Mavs taking it.

just as long as Miami doesnt win lol
If it gets that far, I’m taking the Heat in 6 over Dal.

That’s a good question, man. Think it’s that so many of these guys are so talented/physically superior/have perfected certain moves or whatever that they can get away with being strong hand dominant. Two people that pop in my head immediately are Olajuwon and Iverson. They both could go left but ALWAYS went back to their right hand to get the shot off. I mean literally every single time. When you look at the level they played at and what they accomplished while basiclly being completely 1-handed, that’s pretty crazy. On the flip side you have guys like Bird and Bryant who are/were ridiculous with their off hands. Remember reading that Bird went an entire summer shooting ony left handed, and Bryant has nailed left-handed 3’s in actual NBA games for no other reason than I guess to show he could. Also, during an All-Star game a few years ago Doug Collins said that Rasheed Wallace could beat Chris Bosh in HORSE going left on left. Sheed’s a natural righty. I guess some guys are so good at their particular skill that they don’t “need” to develop their off hand, just counter moves for their initial move and everything opens up from there.

He’s capable of it. People hate because he’s getting the same money as Lebron & Wade, but the guy can go off on any given night.

Just think how much better this Miami Heat team will be NEXT year.

I’ll see your Kobe three and raise you the Larry Bird left handed game

Anyone see Portland fired Rich Cho after 10 months as a GM? Dude didn’t even get to run a single draft. That ownership group is incompetent.

Noah gets a 50K fine for his slur when Kobe got 100K? WTF???

Dallas is going to win tonight. OKC is done for… They’re all whacked off since the whole westbrook drama and are already out of this series IMO

Didn’t know he got the fine, but I almost mentioned what he said last night. You couldn’t hear it, but he clearly said “Fuck you. Fuck you fucking faggot” to somebody near his bench. Don’t understand why Bryant’s would be more, especially since Noah dropped his AFTER the NBA has been going apeshit on the anti-gay tip.

Scj, that Bird vid was cool but he was shooting jumpers right-handed. I vaguely remember reading about that somewhere, and I assumed he literally went the whole game using just his left. Either way, guess that summer paid off. Makes you look at guys like Olajuwon and Iverson who were both league MVP’s and in Olajuwon’s case the best center of the modern era and realize that they could’ve been better if they didn’t have to go back right every single time. Iverson is probably a top 3 shot maker in NBA history [Jordan and Bryant would be the other 2, for me] and the guy had zero left hand. That’s crazy.

Not that it’s perfectly objective(in fact I’m sure it’s perfectly debatable), but Noah also said his to a fan, which seems much worse to me as at least Kobe directed his anger at someone who is actually a part of the game. That+playoffs+pre-existing circumstances of the same situation makes me think Noah probably should’ve gotten a heftier fine, not less.

That said, Kobe’s 100k fine was retarded in the first place, if he paid 25k that’d have been alright and then Noah’s 50k looks ‘good.’

Didn’t know it was towards a fan, but it makes sense. I agree with you man, Noah’s fine should’ve been way more than Bryant’s considering the circumstances. Maybe Noah’s was less publicized, or he’s less of “a face” for the league? Any way you slice it it makes no sense.

Jeezus, D. Rose has got sick game. Fucking unreal some of this shit he was doing. That’s why I was arguing with a buddy over who’s more of a franchise player, Rose or Durant. I think Durant’s stats are ridiculous, but Rose can handle the fucking ball (though he has more turnovers and is inefficient, but his athleticism is unreal…quickest guard). Aren’t he and Wade buddies?

I don’t see Bulls pulling it off in under 7. I see Heat doing it in 5 (now).

But I see Mavs winning it all and Heat winning maybe 2 games, tops. Mavs can move the ball and have talent all over. I’m sick of seeing Miller’s and Bibby’s faces. They’re not doing shit.

And what the fuck is up with Bosh pump faking when he’s got nobody on him? Either shoot the goddamn ball or drive. Yes, I know he scored 30+, but still. Be assertive. He loses opportunities when he’s open but hesitating like that and making unnecessary moves.

Slightly off topic: I’m trying to pitch an idea to Steven Levitt (Freakonomics author) about analyzing something particular to an NBA game (specifically playoffs). I’ll let you guys know if he bites. It’s definitely worthy of discussion in my mind.
Seriously about the prediction change. I guessed Heat in 6 and now that just feels so generous. I guess we should’ve seen it coming, the Heat annihilated a good team (the Celtics), while the Bulls barely beat an 8th seed and let a mediocre Hawks team take team them to 6.

Also Freakonomics is one of my favourite books! Do you know Stephen Levitt, or are you just emailing him randomly?
I have never met Levitt but he seems to love analyzing sports. I’m hoping he takes up my suggestion. I’ll forward you guys the link if he does.

Kobe yelled at the ref and Noah at a fan, right?

Which is worse? Or should it not matter?

Should Kobe get fined more because he’s a higher profile player? Or because he “makes more” money?

Hmm.

Also, has anyone read how much Stern makes annually? What the fuck!
scj119 wrote:

I agree completely. Cho pulled off the Gerald Wallace deal and every other move he made was solid. Sounds like he wasn’t the puppet that Paul Allen wanted. Rick Adleman a possibility to take over the reigns??

It should also be taken into consideration who Kobe is.

As someone who’s a household name across the world, him calling someone a faggot on Television has a lot more of an impact than some role player.

I agree with the decision to give Kobe a bigger fine than Noah.

If you’re a veteran superstar you should be setting the example for others in the NBA.

You know man, I’d be pumped to see any combination of the teams available go at it for the chip. Like I said earlier, I think Dallas wins but wouldn’t be suprised to see OKC pull it out, though I think we’ll have to wait at least one year [maybe 2 depending on a ton of things], and I think Chicago is a much better team overall than Miami but they’re not playing like it so not sure who gets this one. A CHI/OKC Finals would be as fast paced as any in recent memory, CHI/DAL would be a straight shootout, MIA/OKC would end up a lot like a CHI/OKC series and MIA/DAL would probably be the most intense of the possible matchups due to the bad blood and players involved. Any way it turns out, we get a badass matchup.
Pretty much. The Finals are guaranteed a good match up based on the four teams here now.

I hope the Heat take it all. I’d rather see them play OKC, just because I’d rather watch Westbrook and Durant play than Dirk and Terry. I think the Mavs would be an easier series though.

boooooooooooooooooooooo

Just got home btw…OKC punch the Mavs in the boob early

According to the league, the difference is that Bryant said his to an NBA official. Which at first made sense to me then I thought “wait fans are less important?”

Yeah when I looked it up I thought I had heard every shot was left-handed. After watching it still seemed worth a post though. He did score 22pts left handed (according to the blurb; I didn’t keep track) and that’s pretty damn impressive.

Sometimes going up with your right on the left side of the basket is advised (if your right shoulder is close to the basket you can get it up quick or go under a block) but by and large it just doesn’t seem much to ask a PROFESSIONAL BBALL player, especially guards who handle the ball, to finish left handed. Always annoys me.

OKC is on fire.

Honestly, I can’t believe OKC is only up 9 with 4mins left in the 2nd quarter. They should be up 20, this is not good for them.
