Dude, Derrick Rose has passed Kobe Bryant as the “toughest shot maker” in the NBA. That kid hits 17’ runners off the glass from odd angles consistently. I’ve never seen anyone with an arsenal of runners and floaters like that. With pick-and-rolls and collapsing D’s that might be the most important shot for an attacking PG and that kid has mastered it.
His runners are sick nasty but I’m not sure I could put him above Dirk for making tough shots.
Exactly. And not just that but he’s also clutch, probably the most clutch player in the NBA today. This past Dallas Lakers series just solidified how Dirk outplayed the entire Laker roster, especially Kobe, who btw, should be getting more criticism for the Laker’s decomposition.
There’s even a thread in GAL about how Dirk is underrated. Apparently the guy felt that it was such an important thing that he decided not to post it here but create his own thread about it.
There’s also no reason Dirk shouldn’t be marketable, especially internationally. He’s better spoken and more intelligent than 99% of all players in the NBA. His biggest impediment is his lack of championships. That and the fact he’s a white player in the NBA.
I think a big part of it is he’s unathletic. People love (especially casual fans) love players who could potentially throw it down at any time.

I said that the matchup most ripe for exploiting was Kobe, he needed to score 35-40 for them to win.
I love Dirk. I rarely watch him but EVERY time I do I think “I forgot how good he is”, that is the mark of an excellent player to me.
As far as creating a brand around himself I don’t think that should be an excuse. Back in the 90s Vlade Divac was in a lot of ads. He was by far nonathletic but he was charismatic and friendly. Dirk doesn’t need to be charismatic he just needs to start winning and I bet the endorsements will follow.

His team is boring to watch unless you love basketball. How many people are clamoring to get Duncan on their products? I mean ever since his Edge commercials with D Robinson

I wouldn’t put Dirk above Kobe, just because Bryant can get and hit ANY shot inside halfcourt, and Nowitki’s crazy shots are all pretty much the same high arching fade off the back foot. I’d give the edge to Rose now [maybe, still have to think about it] just 'cause almost every runner or layup he takes is being heavily contested and in traffic, and half the time it looks like he’s just launching himself without a clue of what he’s gonna do. It’s total reaction.
Good point - part of my argument was that Dirk may only have that one tough shot he hits, but he can get that shot literally any time he wants and that’s a skill in and of itself. However, the skill required to get that shot is not really part of the question here.
OK so I literally can not miss with this shit. I bet Heat in 5 at 4-to-1 odds… can’t decide if I should hedge. Suppose I should hedge and guarantee $ but I really want to LET IT RIDE. Where’s Teledin?
Basically Pau’s long time girl dumped him this week and reportedly Kobe’s girl Vanessa had some involvement in the decision. So Pau was/is naturally mad at Kobe.
No one can be truly sure if this is actually what happened but it falls in line with the West-LeBron’s mom debacle.
If it’s true it explains a lot about the tension and lack of trust as Bynum put it. Either way some people probably need to cut Pau some slack, getting dumped by your long time boo can mess you up. Dude was probably an emotional roller-coaster the entire second half of the series and he had to deal with the pressure of stepping up his game plus Phil.
Did anyone else notice sardine’s post after the lakers lost yesterday? The guy has completely left the NBA discussions but he can’t resist coming in to diss randman one more time. That’s the definition of animosity right there.
