2009 CPU Nationals

I’ll whore it up a bit and post a recap for those of you who are interested in my results. It was a fun meet, met lotsa nice people and had a blast with Jules, even though she admits to being a bit gay. And not to me, so I don’t know if I should be relieved or offended. Either way, she’s a great roomie, we had a bunch of laughs and she kept me busy whilst I was unable to eat or drink or smoke in the room. Didn’t leave much else to do but compulsively weight myself and walk up and down the main drag looking for a Tim Horton’s so she could eat a bagel.

In retrospect, she may have been trying to actually freeze my ears off so I’d be down a few 100 grams on the scale.
Lifting day finally arrived, we were up at 4 am for the 7 am weigh in. I topped the scale at a svelte 59.1 kg, a PR for me. There were 2 flights of lifters in the morning, Jules was in the first and I was in the second.

During warm-up, I met a guy who I am thinking about hiring as a coach. He stepped up and took my attempt cards to help me out, an act for which I am grateful and full of regret for. But hey, I trust people.
The first flight of lifters finished and I was sitting pretty waiting to hear who’s on deck or in the hole, with my straps down, no wraps and no belt. No announcements were made until “bar is loaded for dianab”. 2 lifters had gone already without any noise at all, no clapping, no announcements, nada.

So I went up on the platform pulling up my straps, my handler threw me my belt and I failed at 102.5 kg for depth. Then I had a nuclear level meltdown, crying, shaking, snot running out my nose, the whole scene.

Before meltdown

After meltdown
107.5 kg, 3 white lights

I bent over pretty good on that lift. My third attempt was 115kg, which is cake for me. On the way into the hole, my handler yelled out “upwards”, him meaning, stay upright. I took it to mean what I heard, get up. Missed lift for depth.

Bench, new set of troubles, but at least the first attempt was clean.
62.5, white lights

So my handler was sure I opened at 67.5 and handed in my second attempt at 70kg. I missed the second and declined the third.

First time ever I smoked the DL.
102.5
112.5
122.5

I made sure my handler knew where I was going and how I was going to get there.
So lessons learned, I totaled 292.5 kg, just a hair under 645 lbs. I left a minimum of 10kg on the squat and 10kg even on the bench in Moosejaw. I also left the Quebec squat record, (but I did tie it) and I missed my Class I by 13kg.

Got me a shiny gold medal to get me stopped at airport security with, frisked briskly and then applauded by the security personal in Regina.
What can I say, I’m a “real” IPF lifter, National level now.

Not getting pics though, hmmm

Last bit of whoring, thanks for reading.

Great work!

Too bad about the squat and bench miscues.

Your timing for Nationals experience is perfect since it looks like next years will be in Quebec!

That was so nice of Julie to let you watch her eat! What are friends for, eh.

Awesome work nonetheless Diana! Thanks for sharing!

Great Job Diana! I am not really sure what they saw depth wise from that first picture, but since I was not there I won’t call them idiots.

Welcome to the Powerlifting club!

I think everyone needs to see the video of your final deadlift where it’s all crotch.

Diana, I’m very proud of you. You did really well. I know that sounds like something a mom would say to her kids but the way you came back from that shitty start is a testament to a lot of guts and grace.

I can hardly wait until next year. I think some quaaludes will help a bit. Do you think that would be a problem?

You were an absolute riot to room with and I haven’t laughed that much in a while. I never did find the pile of steaming shit we could smell.

I ended up spending the rest of the day with Karen and Althea and going to the hot springs. I spent a lot of time listening to them and others. The information I got off the platform was interesting. I’m a bit of a Pollyanna and found all the back room politics and gossip surprising. I must have looked like a little kid with my mouth hanging open saying “Really? REALLY?”

wow, you are freaking strong. And well, I thought you and your hair looked good in all your pics =) Strong women can be sexy.

Look at what you’ve done!

Good work.
It always lifts my spirit and renews my hope in humans when I hear about people over coming adversity.

From one lifter to another, “I’m proud of you!”

Thanks for whoring.

Thanks Malinda! I think I got one white for it, but yeah, I’ll go with idiots.

Thanks Mom, it wasn’t guts or grace though, it was pure unadulterated fear.
You’ll have to fill me in on the gossip. Karen and Althea were a blast huh.

PM your number. I’ve lost it. I’ll fill you in.

Great job Diana! Your depth looked good on your opener and you didn’t even have your knees wrapped.
