They dont practice at full pace as much as you think. If they did they would break down more frequently.
They run through stuff and have a small scrimage but it is rarely 4-5 cardio.
I play at state level in Aus about 2 below pro and have played with and against pro aus players.
Generally with a full time job, 3 games a week and 2 training sessions, I rarely have time for regular weights in season and I drop weight, then put it back on in off season. BUT I am quicker, lighter and jump higher mid season after loosing a few kilos than at the start. Just my experience tells me bulkier is not better in ball, unless your a big guy anyway.
We can agree that a professional basketball player in the NBA (read: most competitive league in the world) practices a minimum of 2.5 hours, and possibly up to 4 hours a day of essentially LSD cardio (long slow distance). They are running practices at slower paces. This will decrease muscle size, with out a doubt.
As to your contention that you are “quicker, lighter and jump higher mid season after losing a few kilos than at the start” : What kind of weight are you losing? It seems that if you are actually jumping higher and becoming more explosive, you are probably losing excess fat. You can’t tell me that losing muscle will help you “jump higher.” It will definitely make you lighter, but unless all your muscle is in your upper body ( in which case you aren’t training properly in general, much less for ball) losing that “big and bulky” muscle won’t help you become more explosive in your vertical jump or help your foot speed.
I will agree that some arm muscle can mess up your mechanics. I have a buddy who started taking creatine after lifting for a couple of years and found that his arms and shoulders grew much faster than they had been growing. This unexpected bulk messed with his shooting stroke. He dropped the creatine and kept lifting and growing slower, as he had done before and became acclimated with the muscle much easier. He also became faster on defense and can jump significantly faster, and is now a PG with post-presence.
[edit: I meant that after putting on weight, he had become faster on defense and was much more athletic, and is now able to post down players because of his new strength. apologies][/quote]
I loose a little bit of fat, tone a little, get more of a leaner body than bulky but my strength generally stays the same. I eat a lot of asap protein (and carbs) after trainings and lifting. My first season I played i started at 74 and ended up 68kgs at seasons end cause of bad diet/recovery.
This last year was a bit different i had a lot going on last year and let myself go in off season more than usual and got to 83kgs, my heaviest ever, coach told me to loose it and now im 77kg. Looking to get cut some more fat and but maintain weight.
My example of my friend who quit ball and lifted heavy that i used before, he is really big in upper body and his balance is off and he doesnt move like he used to. Thats probably more what i mean about being bulky. If it didnt affect the way i ‘felt’ in certain movements on the court I would look to bulk up more.
