16 Neck/16 Arms/16 Calves

My neck hasn’t been 16 inches since I was Freshman in high school. I have no idea how big it is, but it’s certainly thicker than my arms which are around 18. My calves may be 16 though, no idea. Not much for measurements.

where do you measure the neck? at the base? adam’s apple?
Below the apple, around the base.

Do any of you do direct work for your neck? My school’s gym had a neck machine, but the Fitness 19 that I go to now doesn’t. I’ve never done neck work though… it kind of just grows a bit on it’s own from involuntarily flexing it when exerting force, I’m guessing.

I have a 16" neck but 15" arms…

I’d say the ideal size is 17" neck 18" arms…

I don’t bother with calves, sorry.

Shit, at least he didn’t say 15. I can see people are shooting for the stars.

Too bad most don’t get off the ground.
Lol. Some of the “goals” I see on this site are pretty laughable. I still can’t get over the 16.

Wow.

20" is a magical number for me. I want it.

My calves are already 16 and they’re not remarkable at all.
My magical number is my current measurement + 1".

Not sure where sixteen comes from but the"Grecian ideal" dictates that the neck, upper arms, and calves should all be the same size.

This basically got started when Eugene Sandow went around and measured Greek and Roman statues to come up with proportions to build his body to. It was perpetuated for quite some time, probably most famously by Steve Reeves.

I think Arnold was kind of the breaking point away from that measuring stick in pro bodybuilding though.

In Pumping Iron, Arnold does say something like “I have a perfectly proportionate body right now.”
Haha, yeah he does. But I think he had a different standard. First of all, his “peak” measurements claim 22 inch arms, and 20 inch calves, neck not listed. Now I know a lot of people dispute that he actually had 22 inch arms, but whatever the case I don’t think he made a point of trying to make the three measurements the same.

I’ve heard some people say having these ideal proportions will make you look bigger, but I actually think it’s more of the opposite. In photos of Steve Reeves by himself, you could believe he was just an overgrown Abercrombie model, but to see him next to another person (or they say in person) you’re shocked at how large he actually is.

I heard a theory that Arnold wanted to compensate for this by surpassing these proportionate ideals in his arms and chest (he also had more total mass than Reeves’ height:weight ratio would allow) to be even more eye catching without having to compare him to another person.

*For the record, Steve Reeves has my personal favorite physique.

Well, on a BBing stage, it’s damn hard to differentiate between 20" and 22" arms. It’s how everything looks relative to the rest of the phsyqiue. I remember reading that at his biggest, Mentzer’s arms were only about 18 and change. Still, in contest shape, (forget all the crap you read in the mags for a sec)… that’s huge. If you look at pics from hsi prime, no one would say anything to th4e contrary. We lose sight sometimes, but it’s still better to shoot higher than 16" -lol

Wait. This is a bodybuilding website and you guys are saying the ideal arm size is 16"?

You all just got laughed at by a GIRL. And she’s HAWT.

If I were anyone in this thread with 15" arms, I’d run straight to the gym and then straight to the buffet at Golden Corral for about 2-4 hours depending on how full the bathrooms are.

They’ve been cracking down on this lately. This sign is now placed next to all booths. I guess those 350lb’ers were really doing some damage.

Fixed.

That’s it…I’m bringing it back.

First they made laws telling me where I couldn’t take a shit…

Then they arrested me for marking the squat rack as mine…

…But now they want to stop us from farting in public?! Not this time! The line must be drawn here - this far! No further! And I will make them pay for what they’ve done!
