13yr. old phenom at APA Sacramento Meet

The statement “What were you doing at 13???” seems dick-ish because we can’t infer tone, that’s why people are being dicks back. Most people aren’t lifting by 13 anyway, because some parents didn’t lift when we were that age. He did well for his age, yes, but phenom isn’t the right word. I mean c’mon, the last Power magazine has “Dave Hoff: The Phenom” on the front, that’s a phenom. People on the internet are always going to attack things like this because they were expected some kid breaking world records. It doesn’t take away from what he did, your words just weren’t correct and they hurt some of our butts. lol
x2…

You have every reason to be proud he certainly seems to have the drive and ambition to go very far in the PLing game, I could only imagine what his numbers will be like at 18…so yes great job. But to end your post with the negative open ended question “what were you doing at 13?” does as TylerPK4L states infers a negative tone.

But make no mistake I was very impressed with the lifts, it takes a special kind of kid to devote time in the gym at that young of an age when many of us (including myself) would rather be playing video games.

Wish I started at 13, I feel I’ve wasted almost 5 years of my puberty doing nothing productive. Great work. Hope he keeps getting better and break a few records.

And don’t get so pissed off at people for saying what they are saying. It’s the damn internet, how are you going to post on it without having a person or few say something negative, or seemingly negative.

Alright I spent a day reading posts about my 13 YRS OLD stepson. I have a lot of things to say. First of all, I used the term “phenom” is a proud parent, who is very excited about the effort my son has put forth training and competing. I was using it as a form of encouragement and celebration for him a see and be motivated by to continue training and busting ass in the gym on a weekly basis. I did not realize the “exactness” police were going to critique my summary. I don’t know if the haters don’t have children, are jealous, or just down right bad people that they have to degrade a 13 year old. To (Anus bleach, TigerTime, Suflandy, anmericaninsweden, heavytriple, gerrard08) would you say discouraging things to a 13 year old’s face? Or is this classic internet mob/group talk tactics that you have big balls behind a keyboard but are really Grand Canyon size vagina’s in person. To (kpsnap, spar4tee, T3hPunisher, HERC410, robertjr93), thank you for the words and recognition, Henry and I really appreciate it.

BTW:

The APA state/national/and world record in the 13-15 age class at 220 is 340. I think a 315 (305 official) pull for a kid who just turned 13 is pretty phenomonal.

All of the hater talked about what their benches were AT 14 (not 13), not their squat or deadlift. My question has not changed. What were you doing at 13, why weren’t you squating or pulling? I think the mere fact that Henry is, is pretty phenomonal.

To gerrard08 who wnat him to just do BW exercises: you are a douchebag and the reason we suck at weightlifting internationally in this country. Henry can squat 215, what kind of stress and adaptation will BW squats stimulate?

Henry also olympic lifts. He has snatched 85 lbs., clean & jerk 115lbs., cleaned 120lbs. With about 3 months of training.

To all you haters: how many of you have competed and what age did you start? I think starting at 13 and performing well is by its nature phenomonal.

The fact that you are so upset what some people are saying on the internet is disheartening.

Be proud of the kid, try to support him and keep him in interested in things, but for god’s sake, does it really matter if he’s a phenom or not? It seems like you were expecting everybody to bow down to the kid and say he’s the next Brian Carroll. Your comments have came off as boasting and bragging when you really shouldn’t be doing anything of the like. Props to you for supporting the hobby, but shame on you for being so…well, butthurt about everybody’s comments.

I think it’s a terrible thing that the internet is viewed as such an important thing in our lives these days.

Good work with your Stepson, Crow. I would be very proud as well and would post about it to.

I hope with your guidance he becomes a very strong young man.

Rick

Good job to the kid, Crow needs to chill out.

.

I can understand your pride and excitement over your stepson’s acheivement, but I would have refrained from using phenom, or anything close to it. There are many other terms you could have used to make the kid know you were proud as hell.

As soon as I read your post I wouldn’t even look at the video. All I could think of was past posts from another proud parent and his daughter Barbie barbell, and how she had 400 world records at around the same age.

I’m a dad, but there are ways to show you are proud without provoking the flamethowers.

Good luck

awesome lifts

he’s stronger than i was at 18

With all due respect, it’s great that your stepson is lifting that much. When I was 13, I couldn’t even do a push up lol. But I guess it’s the term “phenom” that brought about all this discussion. I understand that you are proud of him and that’s understandable because I would be too if I had a child doing that! It must because I saw this just yesterday but this is what a true “phenom” IMO for a 15 yr old.

585 squat @ 15 y/o (208lb BW) - YouTube
It was raw too. Very strong and probably very gifted.

For the record, I had higher lifts @ 130lbs. Then again, I was 14, but I was also 77lbs lighter.
Is your picture last year’s London Open?
