Leg curls: some to warm up
Squats: some
SLDL: also some
Leg extensions: also some

Notes:

  • Just feeling out how feasible it is to get back to lower body training.
  • Squats felt ok in terms of the ankle once i got past the first few sets. First few hurt quite a bit, but that might have been a stance issue. Brace felt piss poor, so will need to consider how to get my brace back when i decide on a longer term approach.
  • Everything else felt fine, and i was able to push harder on the other exercises without any problem.

Worked up to 5 x 1 @ 90kg

Smith incline bench: lots
Smith JM press: lots
Cable behind the back cable raise: lots
Cable face pulls: lots

Notes:

  • Bench felt really off today, not necessarily weak, but shoulders were definitely feeling it. Backed off from the planned work and just got some volume in instead
  • Assistance, on the other hand, went brilliantly. The pump was serious.

This again, minus the leg curls to warm up because i was half asleep and forgot.

Felt much better today, bumped the weight up slightly, did slightly more reps, all good things. I think a couple more sessions like this should prep me well to increase volume andntry some actual programming once summer holidays are done.

Work for this morning:

2 hours bouldering.

So much new stuff in the centre, i’m pretty much just flashing an endless supply of easy stuff. I’m also climbing so infrequently at the minute that my head is definitely gone, skin is baby soft and endurance is absolutely tanked. Hard to tell whether top end strength is actually still there at this point, but it feels like it probably is? I haven’t climbed with anyone good enough to compare recently.

Squat: worked up to 2 heavy-ish singles then a couple of back off triples

Bench: 3 x 3 @ 90kg

Notes:

  • Squats felt pretty decent, bracing felt better, everything moved on
  • Bench felt ok eventually, but a lot of neck pain in later warm up sets, which is new
  • Gym had only just reopened so was pretty busy. Had to make up assistance a little.

Notes:

  • Starting with the positives, 80/85kg felt like baby weights on bench today, even with technique all over the place
  • Rep strength seems to be absolutely gone, it was a very weird session
  • Absolutely zero motivation again today, took best part of an hour just to get my ass out of bed. Luckily there isn’t really a rush today, but i definitely need that fixed.

Work for today:

2 hours bouldering, plenty of new sets still so i spent the time slowly cruising through some easy climbs. Went up to about V4 level, which is a comfortable flash grade for me, even in my current condition.

Pretty slow pace. Starting with the positives; it feels like top end strength and technique are still there, from what i can tell. On the other hand, skin is baby soft, climbing fitness is gone and my head is not really right either. Didn’t bail on anything today, but didn’t really try anything difficult enough to need to bail on.

Work for the last few weeks:

Spent over 7 hours climbing last Tuesday, taking part in some coaching sessions as well.

Climbed again Thursday and Friday, both pretty heavy sessions so ended up missing my planned gym session Saturday.

Climbed again yesterday, not a bad session. Head seems to be coming back, and performance wasn’t bad either. Feeling pretty positive about it at the minute.

Should also be back to a fairly normal schedule, so will start some form of beginner prep program soon. The aim is to continue losing weight for a couple of months before bumping calories and starting the Dave Tate periodisation bible style programming.

Also climbed for 3 hours yesterday, slow pace but fairly hard and well

Notes:

  • Felt absolutely terrible this morning, so this session was a drag. Hopefully just a bad nights sleep, not a sign of how this program is going to play out.

Not far, or quick, but mostly to test the logistics of running on my way to work and also to see how my ankle feels about it.

On that subject: apart from a few twinges here and there, my ankle finally feels operational, which is nice.

Notes:

  • Feeling really physically beaten up at the minute
  • FSL weights aren’t calculated exactly, they’re just as light as my ego could cope with.
  • Press still hurts quite a bit. Focus on technique and warming up can help, but still far from ideal.
