I’m just catching up on your log, and I know this is 9 days old, but what is your opinion on the queen’s death? As an American, I see people online who are giddy over it, people who are like “that’s too bad,” and people who are devastated. Haven’t actually spoken to a Brit about it though, just seen headlines.

You’d probably see a similar range of reactions over here as well. I think a lot of people had made the assumption that she would live forever, so it’s a bit of a shock for everyone, and she was one of very, very few public figures that no-one has a bad word to say about. Combine those things and pretty much everyone seems to be somewhere on the scale of slightly sad to devastated.

In England that is, right?

In my experience, which is mostly in England. Plenty of people have bad things to say about the Royal Family, but i’ve never heard bad things about the Queen specifically.

Yeah my question was if that’s the impression you got about the English perspective or if that’s the ‘English perspective’ on how the world sees the late queen?

I am strictly curious. I don’t argue politics here nor do I want to provoke anyone or want them to change their views. I do know people who have bad things to say about her though.

That was me speaking strictly from my experiences from people i’ve met. You have to understand the queen isn’t a big topic of conversation, so i’m not making assumptions on how the rest of England, or the rest of the world see her. I guess a better phrasing would be “In my limited interactions with people on the subject, i’ve never heard anyone with a bad word to say about her”. I’m now curious what the bad words would be though.

Oh that’s a surprise! We practically have a live ticker going on every media outlet that you can imagine, so it is a big topic of conversation here whether one likes that or not. I could never understand why that is tbh. There is some strange fascination with monarchs in our media coverage. Mainly the British but also any other European country that still has a royal.

Bad words from all over the world would be spoken about imperialism, colonialism, racism and keeping quiet about crimes against humanity or just lack of apology. While the queen herself may not have commanded people to act out those things, she was either representative of what caused them in the past or at least in a position to establish a different culture of how to process the past. How she conducted herself in those manners was admired by a lot (disciplined, stoic and the like) and the reason for despise by others. So from what I understand she is mainly critiqued for the things she didn’t do, not for the things she did do (like admit mistakes, make apologies).

In my socio-political-bubble or the one I feel closest to anyway, you won’t hear a good thing about monarchy in general. I’m not going to go into detail about what my personal opinion is (nor do I think it matters), I just wanted to shortly answer your question to the best of my personal ability.

Edit: getting dangerously close to an Off Topic conversation.

It’s interesting to see how far spread the media coverage has spread.

Haha yeah that’s why I was so careful to touch on the topic in the first place, especially with unpopular views and opinions.

That said it’s your log. Discuss what you’re comfortable with.

I barely like discussing Off Topic stuff in Off Topic, especially issues like this that i’m not very invested in. For what it’s worth though: I don’t personally believe that political statements from reigning monarchs are helpful, whether or not i agree with those statements. I’m also very, very much not a fan of apologising for things that you didn’t personally play a part in. This is why i was a fan of the Queen, and have become accepting of Charles, because they seem to understand how to do the role they are paid to do, and not try to do the role that our elected representatives are paid to do.

Work for tonight:

1 hour bouldering

Called it quits after a slow warm up because everything was hurting. Biceps, forearms and fingers are all beaten up badly and hurting on every climb. The biceps in particular were feeling dangerously close to an injury, so reluctantly called it early and went home to pop some painkillers and chill. I have to admit to getting very frustrated right now, this last month or so have been one nagging pain to another and my training volume has been really low.

True. Not worth stressing out over internet arguments. I’m sorry to have played my part here. Originally I was just interested in different perspectives

Pretty much the only reason i go into Off Topic too. Sometimes i see a topic thats just so completely clear cut to me, that i can’t even begin to understand how someone can disagree. Then i go to Off Topic and try and find smart people who disagree to explain it to me. It’s not been a roaring success so far, but i live in hope.

Absolutely no drama at all. If i “sound” put out or irritated, that’s just me being a grumpy old man.

Set my eyes on the last problem on the pink circuit, with some success. Got every move, but ran out of skin and strength before i could string them all together.

Fighting off the tail end of man flu at the minute and work is beyond hectic. Good times, but not good for physiques

I’ve been struggling a lot with health this last week. I thought I’d shaken it off, but obviously not.

@SkyzykS @Koestrizer thanks lads. Nothing too dramatic in the grand scheme of things, but it’s not been a fun week.

Fun for today:

6* hours of bouldering

Notes:

  • This was an event at my climbing centre i’d been looking forward to for a while. Really good fun, loads of people and a good laugh. Didn’t do loads of climbing though, partly because of the queues, partly because it was taking me a full 10 minutes to catch my breathe in between climbs. Definitely not recovered yet.
