10 Miles Back Again

Some places just have better words and it’s totally worth co-opting them.

I have zero Texan in me. My default greeting is “Howdy”. I love howdy: it’s two syllabus, so there’s a fair chance people will hear it vs when you say “Hi” or “Hey” and they don’t hear it so you have to repeat yourself and explain that you’re just saying hello. But “hello”, in turn, seems so formal. “Howdy” just hits the mark.

And I LOVE “ya’ll”. Again: just answers the mail too well.

@T3hPwnisher @simo74 i’m a big fan of “y’alright?”. Nice and easy, but also gives them a choice of whether they want a conversation or whether they want to just go about their day.

Gotta say I don’t like that one very much. It was very confusing when I was in Ireland and people greeted me with “how are you?”. At first I was astounded that the supermarket cashier was this friendly and polite until she was equally confused at my answer because she was not prepared to hear how I felt, haha. I prefer to ask someone how they’re doing only if I’m genuinely interested in the answer.
To test if people genuinely care, my standard answer to the question is “I’m doing as always”.

I’ve settled for “Servus”. It’s a Bavarian greeting that I’ve brought with me from my time there. Kinda similar to @T3hPwnisher’s “Howdy”. With less cowboy vibes and more Lederhosen, I guess.

I also dislike this. Happens all the time.

Yeah it’s not unheard of in Germany (usually an extension of a greeting to initiate politeness and a friendly atmosphere) but it’s not as popular as it seems to be in English speaking countries.

For sure. It’s not an uncommon complaint among Americans

To clarify: I only use this in situations where i’m prepared to listen if someone is wanting to talk. Otherwise “Good Morning” suits me fine.

In my part of the US it’s common place for folks to use a grunting “a’yut” sound. Traditionally it’s been used as an affirmative, but it is 100% acceptable to use it as a greeting or hasty departure. I’m a big fan.

As long as you don’t tell people to smile, I will not police your choice of greeting.

That actually happened last week. A professor, whom I hate with a burning vengeance, told me to look friendlier. I aggressively grinned at him like a maniac in an attempt to paint a caricature of a smile for him.

I realize it’s not the same thing we’re talking about since I’m not a woman but I was still super pissed at the weirdo.

Gross, I’m sorry that happened to you. It’s annoying in any case. Nice response though!

Did you see Magnus’ lastest video with Alex Honnold? That is a dangerous friend for your climbing role model to have!

I finished watching it last night. I notice they missed out the bit where he had to explain to his girlfriend what he’d just been definitely not pressured into.

Really wish they had filmed it. That is a viral video waiting to happen.
