I’m excited to see how you like this. I really like the psychological boost you get from the reps diminishing as you get further into the sets, as opposed to the other way around.

I’ve run the daily version before, and it works really well. This is the Middle Aged Pull-up Syndrome version, also known as the version for people who don’t have access to a pull ups bar at home but do have increasingly cranky elbows. I’m doing it every climbing day by just having a few places round the walls that i can do pull ups on and doing sets as i go past.

I like the idea of descending reps though, that makes a lot of sense.

@antiquity i’m rediscovering Pavel and loving it. In between all the ā€œin Soviet Russia, kettlebells lift youā€-schtick, his approach seems to gel so well with Wendler/Dan John/Tactical Barbell.

@boyce79 i don’t think i’ve ever not regretted a run, to be fair. This time i just got my regret in early, to save time later.

  • Realised i should probably be recording how many swings or snatches i do and not just treating it as an exercise in getting out of breathe for a bit.
  • I’ve noted before that the volume jump from the ladders is pretty serious. Definitely felt it today. I’m very glad to have one more workout before i switch to the 24kg bell. I’ll have to make sure i give myself plenty of time, ladders up to 5 will take a while.

  • Probably last climbing session for a week so pushed a bit harder and lost a lot more skin. Going to be a busy time over the next week. Aim to finish this cycle of Rites of Passage and a session or two of core training and pull up program this week.

Hey mate, been a while since I checked in, still working hard I see. I assume you have a place to live these days?

Good to hear from you. Yeah, we’ve got a place with no garage or space for training gear, but 400m from a bouldering gym, hence the change in direction with my training. I’m looking to get a 24hr gym membership over the next few days so i can get access to a barbell again, but I don’t miss it that much. Climbing is much more fun.

Hows your traing going? Are you still irritatingly strong?

Yeah, kinda figured you might have to sacrifice the training space. Bouldering is a pretty great workout itself, just remember not to become a hipster who suddenly dislikes showers and deodorant.

More irritating than strong these days. Feel like my age is finally starting to catch up with me.

Notes:

  • Good session today. Getting better at both doing a warm up and putting drills into my warm ups.
  • Topped a couple of tricky problems, including a long, burly, campusey cave problem right on the edge of my limits. Happy with that.
  • Cardio becoming a limiting factor here.
  • Did some work over the long weekend, but not much and not structured due to poor preparation.

Notes:

  • Back to early morning gymming. To be honest, my headspace at this time of the morning is far more suited for cardio, but i felt the need for some barbell.
  • Also remembered why bench is the only movement i’ve ever consistently done specific warm up exercises for: upper back needs to be warmed up before benching.
  • Just trying to get a feel for Krypteia style training and some appropriate weights here really.
  • Discovered my new gym has a football bar, which is awesome. And that said football bar doesn’t fit in any of the benches, which is less awesome.
