Always something to be said for repetition/practice along with blood flow. “Medium-light-heavy” has worked FOREVER becasue of that.
I think you already know that I like to use a lot of sub max volume to progress things generally speaking…but I really think it is even better for shoulders than it is for everything else. Shoulders recover really, really fast. In my opinion, any time you can press something like 45 5x5 and feel like it wasn’t challenging enough, it is because it wasn’t. You are leaving progress on the table. To put it another way, I wouldn’t spend time on a shoulder session that wasn’t challenging in some way.
To clarify: this was absolutely not a shoulder session, it was an awful leg session with a tiny amount of pressing up front because I need somewhere in the week to put it without finding time for a whole new session, but I understand your larger point.
@T3hPwnisher Morningstar absolutely reinforced that for me. Because none of the sets were challenging individually, but it absolutely worked. Looking forward to some sort of peak after this beast to see how much I’ve built. Definitely can see some squat PRs falling this year.
Yeah, no, I get it. But I think it is a good state of mind to always make your press harder than what your program calls for if you have the energy for it. At least, if you consider the press a priority, which I absolutely do.
Carry on mate. You are doing good stuff here.
Gonna second this. It’s what’s allowed my Olympic lifts to get better.
The light weeks build confidence, technicality and speed, the medium weeks add further confidence at a heavier weight and maybe build a little muscle, and the heavy weeks put it all together in application. Too many people skip those light weeks though. They’re crucial.
Definitely don’t have the energy for it in this session, but your point is well made. After this cycle, I’ve still got 2 more cycles of the squat program to run so i’m definitely interested in making Press a higher priority over Bench again, it’s taken a back seat this time. Mostly because high volume push presses are awesome.
No training today (probably), because my better half took me to a ninja warrior thing this morning. 10/10, would recommend. Extra points for making the serious dude with the gloves storm out before the end.
One of those obstacle courses, where your climb, jump, pull, etc through it on time?
Yep. This one was a cross between one of those and the inflatable things for kids. Had some solid challenges on the obstacle course though.
Sounds nice, have always wanted to try one of those (even if realistically I would probably make an ass of myself by falling at the very first obstacle)
What’s the story with the gloved guy?
At the risk of advertising them, this video should give you an idea of the stuff involved.
They sell gloves there to protect your hands if you’re a bit of a fanny or you don’t have any callouses to protect them yet. This dude was just taking it all a bit seriously and didn’t seem to like me being able to do all of it when he was struggling.
Ah man, I wanna play too.
Wow - that is a big place, looks good.
Maybe it’s wrong to judge but guys with gloves… They lose most respect from me, and it seems like it’s always the same kind of guys that wear them ahahah
It is absolutely not wrong to judge guys with gloves. Half of them are also wearing belts for no reason, so we can judge them for that, too.
There are rare exceptions to the gloves thing, but that’s a different kind of guy.
…

…?
Is that from your high school yearbook?
@Cyrrex you would absolutely crush this mate. Really rewards athleticism and strength to weight ratios.
@doomyguy there’s a lot of different sites, so I didn’t get to try all the stuff in the trailer, but it was that kind of stuff. Loved it.
@aldebaran this dude wasn’t wearing gloves for knurled lifting bars, I think he just wanted to look hardcore.
@alex_uk get off my instagram
Dude, awesome. I have always wanted to participate in one of those.
OMG GO ENGLAND! 2 - 0!!
I am posting this here because of your Britishness. But glad to see this result, screw Germany (for football reasons only).
