10 Miles Back Again

How big is your new gym if you can lose 2 ghr’s?

It’s not massive, but it’s also not well organised. I had to move 3 assault bikes and a chubby middle aged lady to get to the yoke. And discovered a baby log in the process.

Oh man I can only imagine, haha. You can always load diagonal: back right and front left.

I could have done that, but I’d already loaded the two back plates, so to avoid looking like more of a nobhead in front of a champion bodybuilder PT who was watching, I decided to just put extra plates on the front and hope I could move it. Mission successful.

Peer pressure is real ahah that’s why I love running in the little wood where everyone goes to run. Suddenly I’m less of a pussy

Mate, I just took a look at the PRs board in my gym. There’s a girl in there with a 535kg total. One of the O lifters has a 200kg snatch. The PT i was talking about is a multiple times British Champion, and he isn’t the only one in this gym. Definitely big pond time.

I don’t think anyone in my gym even squats two hundred

Same could be said about most of my previous gyms. Except you could take the “2” out and it would still be accurate.

Dam what’s the record snatch in the country/region? That’s some elite level weightlifting considering the WR is like 220

The british record for the snatch would be under that, a quick bit of Google research tells me. I’ll have to do some more digging on that one to find out what’s going on. All the board had, from memory, was Georgi and the lifts. I know so little about O lifting it didn’t even cross my mind to question it.

He might not compete and just juice and lift for kicks ala Clarence Kennedy

@guineapig I took another look at the board today, I misread, he “only” snatches 180kg and clean and jerks 220kg. No other details on who this mysterious dude is though, other than the name “Georgi”. I noticed his name on the powerlifting board with a 700kg total as well. Couldn’t see his name on any of the competition placing they have on the board, but I can have a more detailed look at some point.

Work for today:
Log clean and press:
3 x log x nope

Push press:
5 x 1 @ 75kg

Incline bench:
22-16-12 @ 40kg

Cable row:
25-15-10 @ 40kg

Delt raise machine: lots

Rear delt fly: lots

Notes:

  • Log clean and press (video coming soon) was a nope. That thing is really, really awkward. Couldn’t get it racked on the first 2 reps. Got it racked on the last one, but i was so surprised I pretty much forgot that I was meant to press it. I’d love to blame technique, and I’m sure that can help, but the bottom line is going to be “get stronger”. I think this might be a good short term goal to work towards to help with longer term goals. Probably devote my entire 2nd press day to getting big enough to consistently clean and press this.
  • Incline bench was weak as shit. Think I’ve found a big weakness. I was expecting to be able to do a couple of reps then straight up to 60kg for some work sets but 40kg felt hard enough to spur of the moment go for a 350 set.
  • Keep meaning to do dips in this session but burn my push muscles pretty well without. Maybe that’s the perfect time to suck it up and do them.

As promised: a suitably embarrassing video on many fronts. It definitely looks like I tried to clean the log, which is silly. It also looks like I’m fat and weak as shit though, so I might try and fix that bit first.

Probs some Russian who can thru the gym one day

He offers coaching on O lifting, according to the board. So I assume he’s there regularly.

I think you need to be fatter so you have a belly shelf to rest the log on.

I am a big fan of this approach.

If I may offer some unsolicitied feedback on the video, that was a long time spent with the log lapped (I legit checked to make sure the video hadn’t frozen), which is going to remove just about any chance you have of employing some stretch reflex/pop to get it moving again. I totally get waiting until the moment feels right, but once you’re there, you’ll wanna dip down again to get some momentum.

The handles were facing right at the start, but when you got it in your lap it was very upright again, so you ran out of room on the clean. If, once it’s in your lap, you can have the handles facing away from your body, you’ll have more room to roll it all the way up.

Getting big and strong enough to manhandle this thing will go far.

And for the log watch some vids. I reckon get more upright in the bottom. Like a front squat except ur rowing the last log hard into your chest. Soo the power comes from ur legs and hips to drive it up, and clean/row it up ur body. If ur over the log too much u go no where because u tend to try and like generate force by extending ur back and ur in the way of a vertical log path up.

Or just saw off pieces of the log and make it way lighter.

Just assume I’m always open to feedback from yourself.

In my defence, that was literally the first time in my life I’d ever touched a log, so I’m giving myself a pass on moving slow on that one. I won’t give myself that pass in future though, thank you.

I’ll look to do that next time. I think the big thing causing me issues, technique wise, is not really understanding how wide that log is, and how far away from a standard front racked position I will have to be to hold it with any chance of generating power.

That is the actual goal. I guess the press itself is just a measure.

I should probably have done that beforehand to be honest, I was just very aware of not going in with 25 cues and points to remember. I’m a simple man, complicated stuff confuses me.

@Cyrrex there is a baby log, but that feels like cheating.

Not cheating if it helps you figure out the technique…
