This is one of the sissiest threads I’ve read in a while.
Everyone from forum posters to sports writers have been following this notion that hitting someone is, categorically, a wrong reaction to verbal statements.
That’s bullshit, some words spoken (racism for example) are worse than violence (I’m not talking about governments here so don’t give me some freedom of speech bullshit).
I don’t know what was said to Zidane, so I don’t know whether Matterazi got what he deserved, but I do know that that head-butt could have been much worse. The guy was basically just pushed over and all these sports writers are talking about what a “brutal and vicious” attack it was.
Quit being pussies and eating up this bullshit society has fed us about hitting someone is never appropriate.
In retrospect, he said he would rather be punched in the face. It is doubtful that he had the thought during the match.
To be able to think about the consequences of an action prior to undertaking it is an example of rational thinking.
We all know that Zidane is capable rational thought. Therefore, one can conclude that, with all that was at stake for him, his action was not a result of a rational thought process.

Obofill:
“His priorities were clear and he has no shame. He is a man first, a soccer player second. He felt that in order to be at peace with himself he had to react, and he did.” - quoted from your post.
If one can prioritize and weigh the consequences of his action or inaction, that shows a rational thought process. Whether or not this was Zidane’s actual thought process - who knows? But that’s what you said and I was responding to that.

And it is greatly frowned upon. It is not considered manly at all.
I wouldn’t compare Zidane’s actions to murder nor would I compare his frustration to that of the soldier that hasn’t had decent sleep in weeks and has seen his friends and innocent civilans maimed and murdered by cowards detonating car bombs.
I failed to communicate my point clearly.
Service men are constantly reminded that they need to be extra careful about their actions. It is their responsibility and duty. However, tragedies occur, regardless. These men were not thinking logically.
Well, neither was Zidane. How can you condemn the guy when he was thinking clearly?
You have to either:
a) believe that he thought out the consequences of his headbutt.
b) believe that he is insane and incapable of logical thought.
c) accept what he did as being a result of the intense pain he felt from Materazzi’s comments and/or actions during the game.
If c), then how could you really fault the guy?
I don’t condemn the guy. He just reacted poorly in a bad situation.
I think he just made a mistake is all.
For some odd reason you seem to be arguing the headbutt was the right move in the situation.

Zap, your replies are too emotionally invested (and, of course, you will reply they are not). Your personal biases are very evident. That being said, I cannot debate you further.
Emotion? WTF are you talking about? I don’t care about soccer and only tuned in because it was the finals of the biggers sporting event in the world.
What biases do I have? I never heard of Zidane before.
I am truly impartial on this. I think Zidane made a mistake and likely cost his team a win. Dumb move on his part.
You can defend him as a player and a man. It is silly to defend his mistake. Everyone makes them.
All I know is, I feel Materazzi’s pain, but in the groin…every time I see the latest powerful image feels like a head-butt to the boys…I actually had to turn the powerful image off…

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m not “condemning” Zidane. Ok, he made a mistake. My problem with the people who want to argue that he was somehow justified for lashing out physically. Saying “gee, I made a mistake” is one thing. Attempting to justify it is another.
Somehow I think that the people who think that words can justify violence have never been hit for saying something that someone else disagrees with.

There is a big difference between saying something somebody else disagrees with and constant racial abuse about someones mother dont you think ?
And no ive never been hit by someone who did’nt like what ive said but that said i would never abuse somebody.
And my problem is all the people who are doing their very best to always talk about the headbutt and not on the reason behind it.
Uhh, to whomever said it, how is Mozarella a racial slur? I called Cannavare (sp) Primavera and Matarazzi (sp) Mozzarella because I couldn’t for the life of me remember those names, it’s not racial, it’s just stupid humour. Get off your high horse.
I think it was really stupid of him to do that. There ain’t a word in the whole world that should make him do it. The only one gaining anything from this, was italy. That said, I still respect zidane as one of the sports best players.
Oh, and can we pleease end the ronaldo flaming? I don’t get it at all. Since I watched my first football game, the players has tried to manipulate the referee. This means diving to get a penalty, smashing a player, while when his legs fall off you look at the referee with a surprised look as if you were mother teresa herself. This is very annoying, but come on. Almost everybody does it. If you’re out to take somebody down, take everybody, not just this one guy…

Stupid move. I would’ve respected him more if the headbutt would’ve actually caught the guy in the face though instead of the chest. Although a good shot to the solar plexus does hurt like a mother fucker.
What if he pulled out a switchblade and shanked the guy. How much RP (respect points) would you give him?
Come on buddy I said it was a stupid move. I was just saying itwould’ve been better if he would’ve pulled off a better head butt. How do you go from that to pulling out a switchblade?
In all honesty, considering soccer is gay (it’s true look it up at wikipedia.com), a switchblade would have been much more interesting and given you guys a real reason to argue.

FYI
If you?re accusing someone of being racist, as you were, you might want to learn how to spell their name right, just to support that you are not a complete and total idiot.

100% agree sadly there are people who naivly think that ‘words can never justify violence’
And the flip side is that there are too many people who think that the only way to shut someone up is with your fists/feet/head/whatever weapon you choose.
The best attack on the Spaghettifresser would have been to score the winning goal. That’s what TRUE sports legends do.

Dan is not accusing anyone of being racist.
Well, he accused him of saying something racist, so the same point stands.
I could care less, just pointing out how hypocritical/ignorant it was…

Way to dumb down the thread, guy. :(
Yeah, this thread had a lot of intelligence going for it before he came in.
