Your vs. You're

I’m smart when I need to be smart. I turn it on at work, when I was in College and Grad School, or when I get challenged by someone in person. When I’m at T-Nation or chilling out I turn it off. So you’ll see some grammar mistakes (firefox takes care of spelling) in my posts. It’s not because I’m in idiot, it’s because I don’t give a fuck.

Do you guys correct people in person when they mispronounce something or fuck up their grammar? I’ve noticed insecure people LOVE to do this.

Getting your/you’re mixed up is NOT A TYPO! And pointing out that it’s wrong doesn’t make anyone a grammar nazi.
Misspelling or not knowing the meaning of long, esoteric words is OK…but getting your/you’re mixed up means you are just not that smart.[/quote]

Amen.

No, in person I don’t do this. I usually don’t even do this online either, I just brought it up in context of this thread. I know the world is full of idiots, and most bitching I do is either in my head or to my wife.

This thread is far from dumb considering there are grown fucking adults destroying the English language more and more everyday. Look around your Facebook page, or cruise some others. It’s fucking ridiculous at this point. I’ve seen people over age 30, and sometimes over 40, make the following mistakes:

Utmost spelled as up-most (by a teacher).
Chocolate spelled as choclate (phonetically spelled by a teacher) twice in the same paragraph, indicating it wasn’t some random typo.
Psyched (as in psyched up) spelled as siked.
Psyche (as in my psyche) spelled as sike.
Background spelled as backround (not a typo).
Their, there, and they’re being misused.
You’re and your being misused.
Pedophile spelled as pedifile.
Whose and who’s being misused.
Shining spelled as shinning (not a typo).
Recital spelled as recidle (Word used for a description of her kiddies’ “recidle” at school. The kids are her “shinning” stars. FB user is 36 years old.)

It doesn’t help that it’s vogue (and has been for a couple years now) to “creatively” spell things, for example using letters interchangeably: f/ph, z/s, i/y, k/c, and so on.

“definAtely” fucking annoys me…somehow i am always getting texts that have definAtely in them…
“loosing” is also terrible

this is funny

I’ve seen definitely misspelled so badly once they turned it into another real word. It was something like “I’m defiantly seeing that new movie!”
I posted after asking if his parents didn’t want him to see it but he was damned well going anyway.

We need one of those thread bombs or whatever they’re called (like “Cool Story Bro!” pic) for the “definately” people.

I’ve seen “definitley” quite a few times.

It’s sad that nearly all the botching of the English language is made by young teachers - teachers that are teaching kids who will further botch our language because of their neglect and lack of reading.

SAM:

I know what you mean by saying that jagoffs love correcting people for the sake of it. I’ve only corrected people because, although I’m not the best communicator or writer, bad grammar and articulation simply annoy the living shit out of me! Ask me why, and I have NO answer; it’s a completely IRRATIONAL pet peeve of mine, not a LOGICAL one.

However, I don’t know if insecurity has anything to do with this. I know plenty of arrogant, annoying people who are pretty comfortable with themselves, despite being thoroughly irritating to others.

This is true, but I’m not saying ALL people that correct others are insecure. But a lot of the time when you’re casually hanging out and shooting the shit, it’s the insecure guy who feels the need to correct everyone. I’m not talking about the guy who jokes about you making a mistake, I mean the guy who does it to make himself look and feel smarter. Nobody likes that guy.

I’ll also admit that sometimes it can be annoying reading posts with misspelled words or shitty grammar, but it’s even more annoying when people make a post to point it out and correct them.
