I’m looking for a new series to delve into. In the meanwhile, off the top of my head, and in no particular order, my top series. Some are not exactly recent.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Transatlantic
Ozark
Peaky Blinders
Outlander
Justified
The Alienist
Turn: Washington’s spies
Tudors
Versailles
The Gentleman‘s Game
All the Light We Cannot See
Gangs of London
Sure I’m missing several but that’s what come to mind.
Im not much for series and usually end up seeing them years after they were popular but I enjoyed Sopranos, OZ (first 4ish seasons) and Boardwalk Empire (first 3ish seasons). It seems like a lot of series start out great and slowly fall into nonsense.
Oh, but one I absolutely love is Shoresy. Season 5 comes out in a few weeks on Hulu. It’s the only show I currently get excited to watch.
If you don’t want a long term commitment, and you enjoy action, violence, old west then American Primeval is excellent (it’s only 1 season). It involves several different groups in the Western United States in the 1800s, when white settlers were heading west, but also while Indians were still attacking and raiding settlements and caravans, AND toss in the Mormons who were trying to lay claim to all of Utah and get rid of anyone who wasn’t Mormon, by any means necessary (of course violently, which I found interesting since they are so religious). All of the episodes in the series are fast-paced and the cinematography is beautiful.
Also only 1 season is a series called “The Gentlemen” about British gangsters, it’s great as well.
I know I’ve only mentioned 1 season series, but that’s mainly because I watch multi season series on other platforms and you just mentioned Netflix. Oh, not a series but a great western/action movie in the same vein as the first one I mentioned above, check out Bone Tomahawk! It’s violent and gory, but also a really cool movie.
RIGHT?!?! It was crazy, but being a huge horror/gore fan I loved it! I was on the edge of my seat when “all that” went down. Before all that, I agree, it was pretty routine western, but the latter part of the film totally made it great.
I just watched “The Rip”, it just came out on Netflix with Damon/Affleck, it was a good action movie
I haven’t, but I’m typically not a sci-fi fan. I’ll start an episode and see how I feel about it. I’m pretty quick to judge these for better or worse.
I’m probably the only human who hasn’t watched Better Call Saul or Breaking Bad. I’m tempted, but those are huge time commitments. I’ll give them a shot nonetheless. As well as Resident Alien. Thank you both.
I saw the preview for American Primevel and it was a young mother and child ducking under a wagon with gunfire erupting all around them. For some reason, maybe it was the hour, it struck me as something I didn’t want to watch, but maybe I’ll start from the beginning and give it a chance.
The Gentleman sounds like something I’d get into. Thanks.
My all time favourites are all on HBO: Sopranos, The Wire, Treme etc.
Netflix has so many series I can’t recall the all, but the already mentioned Breaking Bad and Peaky Blinders are definitely worth the watch.
And if you don’t have prejudices towards animated series: The Arcane’s 1st season is probably one of the best shows Netflix has put out in recent years. 2nd season was alright, but the first was phenomenal.
Are you familiar with the books?
I have really mixed feelings with the series. It’s well made and I did enjoy it, but it deviates from the books quite a bit. It’s more like a americanized fanfiction based on the books.
I actually think some things/situations are done better in the series, like the detective and Wade are very well done characters. The girlboss nanofibre -researcher is quite annoying though. I also liked what they did with ”Will” (can’t remember the book guy’s name).
If you haven’t read the books, I can assure you. 2nd season should be a wild ride.
I took a break from Better Call Saul after season two, it was meh. My son finished it and told me it is better than Breaking Bad, that it really picks up after season two.
I trust his judgement, so I will have to finish it now.
