That movie is the first thing that I thought of when someone brought up that argument. But that movie was also based on the premise that that kid’s life was basically predestined to be fucked up.
The writers had a specific twisted idea of how having the power to go back and make different decisions could result in bad things happening. But there is nothing saying that this would actually be the case.
So, like I said before, unless you subscribe to the idea that life is going to be fucked up no matter what choices you make, then it doesn’t really apply.
Besides, if you subscribe to that philosophy, then regardless of what power you had, you are going to make decisions that are going to wind up fucking things up down the line. If you had the power to manipulate time, then you could at least have a chance to try to make things better, without it you don’t even have that chance.

Agreed. Besides, in the Butterfly Effect (which I thought was a horribly lame and overly pessimistic movie) he doesn’t have complete control over time.
We could carefully choose every word we say, every move we make, until we got the desired result. I also think it would be cool to do a bunch of cool stuff in slow motion, like dodge bullets, or grab bullets out of midair and drop them on the ground. Basically stuff that would freak people out in a “he’s freaking amazing” way.
