Depends on how technical you want to get (of course, I started that game on this topic). I believe the DSM IV says that someone has to get sexual enjoyment solely from the fantasy for three months to be considered a full-fledged paraphilia… my point is not diagnostic. I’m just pointing out that a sexual peculiarity or fixation is not always a fetish, and is not always centered on an object.

Well, of course there are kinky things people are into other than fetishes. I just wanted to point out that calling BDSM and rape fantasies paraphilias (or, more appropriately, implying it) is unfair. While I agree that both are definately paraphilias in some people, for most people it is a perfectly healthy expression of sexuality. More importantly, these things aren’t fixations for most people that enjoy them, they are just something they enjoy doing.

Regarding the DSM-IV TR, I obviously don’t know how strong your background in psychology is, but if you are familiar with diagnostic criteria, I assume you must also be familiar with how much training is needed to be able to use it (otherwise, any jerk with a copy would be a clinician).

Nephorm is not intended to cure, diagnose, or treat any disease. Nephorm should not be taken on an empty stomach. Nephorm is not for pregnant women or people with a chronic history of heart, liver, or kidney problems. Nephorm is best taken at night.

Yes, I’m familiar. I’m not trying to do a diagnosis of anything, of course, and I’m also very aware of the shortcomings of the DSM. As far as healthy sexual expression goes, the original meaning of the term didn’t have the unrelentingly pejorative connotations that you’re picking up on. I’m not in the business of trying to figure out who is “deviant” or unhealthy in the head.
