You Know You're Asian When

It’s pretty obvious from your post that you’re Asian and the tone of this thread is meant to be funny. It is healthy for people to joke about/question their upbringing and social norms.

I feel that there is no such thing as “Asian industriousness”.

For example, there are plenty of people who criticize the education system in S. Korea. There is a reason why many of the well-off people desire to have their kids be educated outside of the country and will pay lots of money to send them off to foreign countries.

Of course there are also its proponents. That’s why I think “tiger parenting” seems to be an either or proposition- either your child succeeds greatly or your child fails miserably. I didn’t see a middle-ground in my personal experience.

This reminds me of the Chinese weightlifting system. Throw tens of thousands of kids into sports school and the 5 that don’t get injured become world champions

I see otherwise. Perhaps I should have said Asian New Yorker or Asian American because that’s what I saw and see. I add academic achievement in there too.

I’ll also add two other observations: high investment parenting and high community involvement.

One can say, as you have, there isn’t an Asian industriousness but I’ve seen places in NYC go from dilapidated to fresh in just a few years.

Anyway, this isn’t really my thread. I just was compelled to throw some stuff in here.

I have zero experience with New York but I’d love to hear other people’s stories. There’s a few guys on here in the area, aren’t there?

Is riding a bike slowly and smoking a cigarette at the same time an Asian thing? Only ask because I’ve only seen it 3 times, and they’re batting a thousand so far.

Haha we have some immigrants here from Myanmar (formerly Burma I believe), and I’ve seen this exact thing several times lately.

Well, since I’m Korean the definition of what you seem to be stating here is the “Miracle on the Han River”, so I don’t think it’s isolated to New Yorkers or Americans.

However, while certainly Koreans worked their ass off during said “miracle”, that phrase is a derivative of what the Western Germans did.

And I think a lot of the people who promote how great Asians are in the U.S. are promoting the “model minority” concept. Which, for the record, I don’t think is necessarily a bad thing.

It’s just that I’ve seen my share of supposed “model minorities” fail at being a model citizen.

Maybe the Asians in CA are different from the Asians in New York.

I don’t think you were getting flack. I remember just adding some clarity to the issue stating that typically more industrious people tend to uproot themselves from their home countries and seek their fortunes in foreign lands, and their offspring will learn from example since they’re being brought up by such parents.

American Caucasians who settle down in my country are typically more industrious and wealthy than the average local.

I can’t speak for other Asians since in South Asia alone there are multiple different cultures, races and ethnicities, but this is a reason why education is normally emphasized so much in Chinese culture.

Thanks for the post.

Perhaps the Asian population in CA is more diverse in ethnicities. In NY, at least amongst those I know and have known, Asian usually implies Chinese or Korean. We don’t have many Cambodians, Vietnamese, Japanese, and so on. We do have a fair share of Filipinos but they are seldom referred to as Asians, even though they are.

I’ve never promoted some model minority concept and I’m well aware that no group in America only has model citizens. However, my old town, where my mom still lives, is now majority Asian as well as one town over, where my grandmother resided. I don’t think the people I know who still reside there are interested in promoting any concepts, but when people become aware of, observe, or receive payments for homes of 750k-plus, in cash (!), entrances in top-tier schools, high-investment parenting, rule abidance, and businesses (some of which are learning centers), they them might think to themselves that someone’s “doing it right”.

That’s all. Simple.

In the 80s there were some more non-model citizens and there was a fair share of gang activity in Chinatown and Flushing but that is really long gone.

Worked for 5,000+ years of human history. Experiments in zero corporal punishment are not encouraging.

You can easily check the median income of people in Asian countries online. They aren’t very high.

Rich Chinese citizens buying up property overseas isn’t new. One of my clients paid over 1 million for an apartment in cash and made a couple of other investments to get a green card here. These people are a very small minority percentage-wise. China has a population of 1 billion. When I was shopping for an apartment in Shenzhen several years ago, one HOUSEWIFE bought TEN in the same block.
