how could I forget the BUBBLE TEA
I really wish I’d grown up in a big city in the 80’s & 90’s. I skated as a kid, and being in NYC or SoCal would’ve been awesome. I love the music, the culture…everything! Even my parents and their peers, though they were from a small Midwestern town, grew up in that era and it just sounds so much better than mine. People actually did stuff!
@dt79 When I lived in the Bay Area, I saw Peters live -hilarious, obviously.
I still use “Be A Man” as a diss to my friends LOL.
You know you’re Asian when a young(er) buck (also Asian) with arms twice the size of your’s moves respectfully to the side as he passes you in a narrow area in the gym, while avoiding eye contact.
There was plenty of opportunity to get involved in skating back in the 70s to 90s in NYC. My acquaintance’s godfather was Andy Kessler. Another guy from my town became big in rollerblading.
As you can see I deleted my post because even though it was complimentary, as of late, people have become so sensitive about race and ethnicity and when I previously complimented Asian American industriousness, I even got some flack for that.
Anyway, I’ll give it a stab again. I said I appreciate the thread because I grew up and went to school with many Asians and my close friend of 32 years is Korean. Some of our year books had two-plus pages for the surnames Park and Lee, no kidding.
I also loved Chinatown in Manhattan back in the 80s and 90s, the restaurants and the stores. And one could buy fireworks in the summer with no one batting an eye!
There’s a saying: NYC was its best when it was at its worst!
I just want to add the opposite: that I wish I grew up in a rural environment.
I was considering making a thread about “Old New York” and some of its various subcultures but I am not sure if there would be interest.
There’s an interest for everything on this forum. I thought this thread would be called out for being racist
That’s why I was hesitant in even complimenting Asian Americans in here. Actually, I’m not kidding, from being around them so much, I am inclined to emulate them in parenting.
I’m also a beneficiary of sorts from Asian industriousness. A family bought my grandmothers home for a hefty sum in cash. They were next door neighbors to her and even looked after her sometimes before she went to an LTC.
As an Asian, I’m honored, but please don’t emulate the younger parents today who spoil their (only child) rotten.![]()
I wasn’t an only child and my parents aren’t young, but they definitely spoil me (which has only gotten worse over the years)
My friend told me about that new trend.
Anyone here been to Flushing, Queens?
Anyone remember the Martial arts movies by the SHaw Brothers and Golden Harvest in the 80s? I watched them on Saturday afternoons with my granddad. Netflix has them and I still watch them from time to time. You Tube too.
And you’re welcome. I plan on sending my kids to the pre-STEM summer camp two blocks from my house when they’re of the appropriate age. Guess the ethnicity of the instructor. ![]()
You don’t know how hard my mom tried to make me a STEM kid. She wanted a piano playing physicist, she got a food blogger who almost majored in Russian Studies
My 2 cents / n=1, don’t swing too far to the other side of the coin either or they’ll despise you for a good chunk of their pre 18 life
n=1 + pretty much every well conducted study on child psychology
I’be seen both ways. There’s a middle ground between American permissive parenting and Tiger Parenting, I believe.
Which a large chunk of Asians apparently neglected to read…
On a similar note, do you know what studies concluded about corporal punishment?
