My favorite set-up 20 years ago was a '78 Fender P bass (Olympic white, white pick guard, rosewood fretboard) played through an Ampeg SVT head and 8x10 cabinet.
I was primarily a pick player because I liked the attack, plus I was able to simultaneously dampen the strings at the bridge with my palm to eliminate the overtones and give it an overall punchier sound.
