What about those $800 video cards?
Or the $800 processors?
The hard drive?
The no worries put in a game and it will work (almost) perfect?
The instant on & off, and screen of a TV?
These are the advantages of a console. Don’t get me wrong, the graphics will always be better on the PC but its a different experience.
The problem with cell processors is there has not been any before. If you’ve ever programmed, or know a programmer (even someone who works developing games) the cell processor is not an easy thing to take advantage of. Nor is all the extra space from BluRay.
The problem with cell processors is this: traditionally all programs have run on one cpu executing one command at a time. Now they have the potential to run AI on one processor, handle the data in and out (getting graphics and everything else thats stored on the disc) on another processor, graphics on another, and sound on another. Thats a huge ammount of extra processing & programming, especially when nobody has really ever done it to this extent or for this purpose before.
The extra space and better graphics mean that the devs will have to spend a lot of extra time makeing the games look better, its not a simple process of fliping a switch.
Games won’t take advantage of these features (they never do in the first games anyways, compare Halo 1 to Halo 2) for a year or 2. Right now, the graphics will look somewhat better than what is on the Xbox and PS2. In a few years, there will not be a comparison.
As for which console to buy, it depends only on games. The graphics will be pretty damn close, it depends on the maker of the game to put this in. You play it for the games and not the graphics anyways. So, compare the current games on the PS2 to the Xbox, and choose the one which has more games you like.
As for online don’t underestimate it. For me, Xbox Live is the best part of the Xbox. Its too bad you have to pay yearly/monthly, but its by far the funnest playing with your friends or random people multi player.
(you don’t have to do all that crazy stuff with the MAC address by the way; the best place to get info on that is from the xbox (360)/ps2 site, as its official and made to be simple, written by professionals).
