Well atleast you have a lawyer AKA Kuz to bail you out if something goes amiss…

Whatever you decide, I’d highly recommend Gamefly.com. The service is a little slow, but it’s great for a casual gamer. For the price of one game, you could sign up for Gamefly for 2-3 months and possibly play through all of the launch titles for a particular system. It’s also easy to cancel if you don’t like it or get too busy.

Alright, dumb question…how the hell do you hook it up to play on line? What if you have digital cable? Does it cost extra? Like I said, I’m not as schooled as everyone else seems to be.

This is copied from another forum. The poster is a friend of mine that worked in the video game industry for years:

A bit of background:

Developers & publishers are pretty pissed off with Sony, and have been for the last 5 years. Sony has treadted most pubs & devs like crap, making them jump through hoops to get stuff from them. Microsoft has done just the opposite, they’ve offered so much help to anyone that makes games for their system, helped them with coding issues, worked through manufacturing problems & distribution clogs.

Sony acted like they ruled the universe and there was nothing that could be done. MS tried to create partners with everyone to make the system better. All of that ground work is going to pay off tons this round, and Sony is very scared of what could be their fall from grace this generation of systems. Thing is, it’s their own fault.

Plus, the system that comes out first is generally the one to go with. They get that extra holiday season, their second gen titles will be going against the latecomer’s first gen titles. So, while developers are still learning how to make games on the PS3, they’ll be working on the second game for Xbox 360, which means they’ll have learned a ton about the hardware, amking for better games. That was the single largest advantage, on the development side, that the PS2 had over all of its competitors.

First lets point out a few things…

1.) Something that comes out later is most likely always gonna be better in some way. Maybe the box looks better whatever. Decide whether you can live with the 360 and the games coming out for it for the next 2-3 years and go from there. There won’t be a major overhaul for 3-5 years from now.

2.) The original x-box did not have a plethora of games when it came out and doubters said it would fail. No it didn’t fail and the 2nd time around Microsoft learned and lookat the games coming out. Elder Scrolls, Madden 06, several racing games, several role playing games.

3.) X-box has been weak on role playing games but Kotor, Kotor II and the sequels that are rumored make me want to buy one right now.

4.) Sony has had a strangle on this market. Still holds 70% of the market share. So it is no wonder they would make developers jump through hoops. Why work with someone who isn’t gonna do what you want when you own 3/4 of the market? Microsoft on the other hand wanted in and that is why they did exactly what they did. Form a base of partners, get feed back and then take over more and more market share.

5.) The PS3 will be awesome. The 360 will be awesome. It will soon be to a point that we can no longer tell the difference between the two and these two iterations make it that much harder. The 360 has 2 processors at 3.2 ghz if I remember right, with 6 total channels of data streaming. The programming environment has been top notch according to many developers.

I don’t know much about the sony unit just that it comes out in march - april and the price will be 500 according to the articles. I don’t see it coming in much under that due to the higher cost of the technology ie: proprietary sony cpu chip being used, blue-ray etc.

In the end both systems look good but I’m probably going to go with a 360 around april or so. It looks to have much more support from developers this time around and I like the controllers. It looks pimp.

for 600 dollars you could just upgrade your pc to play equally realistic looking games with all the other adv of pc. it would only cost around 300 actually.

What about those $800 video cards?
Or the $800 processors?
The hard drive?
The no worries put in a game and it will work (almost) perfect?
The instant on & off, and screen of a TV?

These are the advantages of a console. Don’t get me wrong, the graphics will always be better on the PC but its a different experience.

The problem with cell processors is there has not been any before. If you’ve ever programmed, or know a programmer (even someone who works developing games) the cell processor is not an easy thing to take advantage of. Nor is all the extra space from BluRay.

The problem with cell processors is this: traditionally all programs have run on one cpu executing one command at a time. Now they have the potential to run AI on one processor, handle the data in and out (getting graphics and everything else thats stored on the disc) on another processor, graphics on another, and sound on another. Thats a huge ammount of extra processing & programming, especially when nobody has really ever done it to this extent or for this purpose before.

The extra space and better graphics mean that the devs will have to spend a lot of extra time makeing the games look better, its not a simple process of fliping a switch.

Games won’t take advantage of these features (they never do in the first games anyways, compare Halo 1 to Halo 2) for a year or 2. Right now, the graphics will look somewhat better than what is on the Xbox and PS2. In a few years, there will not be a comparison.

As for which console to buy, it depends only on games. The graphics will be pretty damn close, it depends on the maker of the game to put this in. You play it for the games and not the graphics anyways. So, compare the current games on the PS2 to the Xbox, and choose the one which has more games you like.

As for online don’t underestimate it. For me, Xbox Live is the best part of the Xbox. Its too bad you have to pay yearly/monthly, but its by far the funnest playing with your friends or random people multi player.

(you don’t have to do all that crazy stuff with the MAC address by the way; the best place to get info on that is from the xbox (360)/ps2 site, as its official and made to be simple, written by professionals).

its actually 3- 3.2 ghz processors 2 threads per chip. I also believe the sony will come out at 500 one of the reasons among several is their graphics chip. There manufacturer nvidia or something like made the graphics chip for the xbox. The wanted a percenttage for each 360 that sold so xbox dumped them (obviously this would mean microsoft couldn’t sell at the price range they wanted to sell)and picked up Ati which turned out to be better anyway. So sony useds they company the microsoft dumped thus will pass on the extra cost to the consumers. Is sony’s gpu better than the 360 ? no.

ps
i’m still undecided right now I’m going to wait till next year when the ps3 comes out.

The only thing that will make the XBOX better than the PS3 is if you want HALO 3. Otherwise wait for the PS3

All I’m gonna suggest is that everyone should look at A) Gears of War and B)Metal Gear Solid 4…then buy both systems…

I just realized something:
Xbox 360 is going to do very good.
Right now it comes with 2 games for the same price as, or a bit more than the PS 3 will (and the PS 3 will have less games.)

These consoles sell the most at the holiday season, a significant proportion of yearly sales. If Microsoft was (/is?) able to release enough units to fill a significant proportion of that demand, they will be 1 up on the PS 3.

Next holiday season, the Xbox will be at a lower price than the PS 3, as it has been out for 6 months longer, so they will have worked out more of the problems in the supply chain (I hear that IBM can’t manufacture nearly enough processors for the XBOX yet).
Now consider the average buyer: parents buying for their kids (I’m pretty sure this is true). These consoles are expensive: the parents will buy the cheaper one, and/or possibly the one bundled with games, as they won’t have to buy games.

So, with more people getting Xbox 360s, the market share will larger than the PS 3 (well not neccissarly larger, but larger in proportion to the Xbox vs PS 2). Hence, more developers, and more games (which is one of the major factors in deciding which console.)

You’d be smart to wait at least 6 months regarless, price will/might come down & you’ll have a better comparison between the two. (and you can buy used ones).

You forgot to factor in the huge number of people buying these systems who aren’t kids. I personally am willing to wait to see what the PS3 has to offer. I have always had a playstation so I probably won’t switch up now. I doubt I am alone in that. There’s no doubt Microsoft is pulling in a huge bankroll releasing the product when they did, but the word is, Madden sucks this time around and what will end up selling more systems are the games that are actually released for them. That, and I think the controls for the Xbox suck monkey ass.

Will the PS3 be bacward compatible, i.e. play PS2 and PS1 games? That`s one of the coolest features I appreciated about the PS2. Something Nintendo never cared for.

Your a monkeys ass. I don’t own a console anymore but I loved the old x-box controller (have yet to try the new one).

Nothing beats the goold old qwerty keyboard and mouse though…

Anybody actually score an Xbox 360? Are the errors as prevelant as mentioned on the news?

Both the PS2 and the first Xbox had bugs that needed to be worked out when originally released. There are even rumors of some systems catching on fire before minor glitches were fixed. I wouldn’t expect for this to be any different…which is why rushing to be the first one on the block with a new system probably isn’t the smartest move.

yeah got mine on the release day. premium pack + extra wireless controller + 2 play-n-charge kits + COD2 & Perfect dark Zero = shit load of money.

anyway graphics wize CoD2 for the 360 looks just as good as it does on a pc with a 7800… no lie.

imo it is too early to compare a three-sixty to the ps3… its all speculation. sony is staying quite on the ps3. But they did say that, its b/c all the way to ps1, theres not going to be region coding on ps3 games (so no more importing). support of 7(yes 7) wireless controllers. and dual screen support. and they are going to redisgn the “boomerang”.

oh yeah alot of people are having problems with their PSU overheating. its basically the size of a pc psu with out a fan.

all in all if you dont have one already good luck finding one, alot of the shops are saying that they’re sold out until next year.

The second Xbox controller is way better than the first. I didn’t like it at first, but I got use to it, and its way better. All my friends liked it instantly.

Yea, your right. The average age of gamers is 26-30 or something like that.

Have I ever said anything hostile towards you? If so I apologize but I have no recollection of doing so. Anyways please hold on because I just received a memo. It reads:
“Childish behavior spotted in the ‘Xbox 360 or PS3’ thread.”
