Reuters - Peter Lavoy, acting assistant secretary of defense for Asia and Pacific security affairs, said the military is investigating what occurred and that all 140,000 coalition troops in Afghanistan are being retrained in the handling of religious materials.
Lavoy apologized multiple times during a brief speech during prayer services at the ADAMS Center in Sterling, one of the largest mosques in the country.
“I come here today to apologize on behalf of the Department of Defense for the incident that took place in Afghanistan this week,” Lavoy told worshippers, saying the burnings were done “unknowingly and improperly.”
Previously, the president of the United States issued his “deep regret” to the Afghan president for the apparent accident. “I wish to express my deep regret for the reported incident,” President Obama said in a letter to President Karzai. “I extend to you and the Afghan people my sincere apologies.”
I don’t think that burning the Koran serves any useful purpose and I would discourage it, but this sycophantic groveling is disgusting.
The troops were trying to dispose of them, correct? As in, they were not needed? I don’t see what the big deal is if they’re trying to get rid of them. I’d feel the same way if it was the Bible or another holy book. People blow this shit way out of proportion.

Yep. The Muslims are all fucking nuts, every one of them. We need to kick them out of this land of ours (all other people are fine) and then fire bomb the real bad places, like Kabul and Damascus. The Military was trying to get rid of these particular Korans because prisoners where writing notes in them to one another(escape plans, cooking recipes who the fuck cares). I think it’s important to know why they where burned it’s not because of religion it was because of said books where already tampered with.

NATO officials promised to meet Afghan nation?s demand of bringing to justice, through an open trial, those responsible for the incident and it was agreed that the perpetrators of the crime be brought to justice as soon as possible.
