WTF? High Blood Sugar Levels

Hi All.

WTF? Been testing blood sugar levels in the morning lately on a whim and they’re between 100 and 125.

I’m 41, no historical blood sugar problems, just a little fat on me, 5’9", 197lbs (put on 20-25 pounds from the gym the last 6 months), on TRT the last 6 months.

I’m definitely under 150 grams of carbs a day, and mostly under 100grams. No soda pop, little to no processed foods, gluten free aside from an occasional slice of pizza, rarely have alcohol.

High fat low carb diet.

Pretreatment labs, 6 week labs, and 6 month labs are here: 41 Year Old, 6 Month Lab Test Results - Testosterone Replacement - Forums - T Nation

Pretreatment Glucose was 91
6 month was 85 (Estradiol 39)

A couple months later, the last week first thing in the morning blood sugar levels have been 124, 104, 113.

My nurse wife tells me this is pre-diabetic and ‘that’s not good, honey’.

WTF? We’ve been doing the low carb high fat seriously for the last couple months, seems like lower carbs is supposed to fix a high blood sugar level thing.

I’m regular in the gym with heavy weights. No cardio, but short walks most every day.

No history of diabetes in the family (my dad’s now pre-diabetic, but he’s a somehow functional whiskey chugger so no surprise there).

And as far as I can tell from reading around here, TRT is supposed to help with blood sugar levels/function.

Thoughts?

Help.

HbA1C (glycosylated hemoglobin is one of the best tests to see the big picture in terms of blood sugar levels. The range you want is < 6.5% but the pros prefer to see <6%. The test shows how far above normal your blood sugars have been, on average, over the past 3 months.

If you’re already watching what you eat and exercising, you may need an oral blood sugar medication like Metformin or Glyburide.

This isn’t something you should leave or put off. Seek help, especially if you experience excess urination, excess thirst, or excess hunger.

No thirst/hunger/urination. Those symptoms don’t hit till levels like 400-500.

Metformin causes B12 deficiency. Not planning on taking any drugs, planning on finding and fixing the problem.

Planning on taking the hbaic at some point here.

Mostly I’m wondering WTF I have high blood sugar if my carb intake is low, nutrition intake is solid, exercise, etc.

Especially if TRT is supposed to help with blood sugar levels/mechanism…and mine’s up.

No urination/thirst/hunger. Those don’t kick in until levels 400ish

Not taking Metformin, it causes B12 deficiency. Not planning on taking any drugs, planning on finding and fixing the problem.

Planning on taking an hba1c here at some point soon.

Mostly I’m wondering WTF I have high blood sugar if my carb intake is low, nutrition intake is solid, exercise, etc. And if TRT is supposed to help with blood sugar levels/mechanism, why is mine higher?

Hmmm.

Nelson Vegel says iodine raises blood sugar levels.

I’m taking 4-6 drops of nascent iodine per day, because fukishima and west coast living.

Guess I’ll have to look into that more.

Drop 20+ pounds and your blood sugar will probably return to normal. If it doesn’t you’ve probably got a genetic condition that you’ll have to manage with medication. Welcome to being over 40. I’m only 38, and recently tested 106 after 5 or so years on TRT, which prompted my doc to do the 2 hour test and tel me I am “pre-diabetic” also.

I don’t have 20 pounds of fat to lose…so…
And I don’t see any reason to dropping muscle gains.

No likey any ‘genetic’ predisposition. Hypogonadism and shitty blood sugar level mechanism? Dumb.

Huh.

Iodine is know to raise blood sugar levels in non-diabetics…and lower blood sugar levels of diabetics.

Quitting iodine and will see what happens.
