I went into that wanting both teams to win, but by half time I was on the side of Spain. Holland was unnecessarily brutal, and has tarnished its glorious reputation. Still, they did have some good chances, and Robben, who failed to score on not one, but two breakaways, will not sleep well for a while. And I was calling a Spain win back in the group stages.
At least England did one thing well this World Cup: I thought Webb did a great job. When players are fouling left, right and center like that, the ref is in a lose-lose situation. He cannot possibly see everything, and has to really hesitate to give a red, especially early on, because then he’ll be accused of determining the game, but the reality is that Holland should have had a man sent off after that flying kick to Alonso’s chest. For the Dutch to complain about the ref is just beyond pathetic. He could have been much worse to them. The Guardian joked that Webb could almost have sent all the players off, and then claimed the cup for England, as the last man standing.
A crappy end to the WC, but at least the octopus emerges with his reputation intact.
