World Cup 2010 Thread

Oh and sorry Masch… :expressionless:

Spain victorious, but that game could have gone either way.(WOW!) Paraguay came so close in the 88 or 89th minute to scoring and evening the match, but the spanish keeper did well to make the big save. Villa just like he did against Portugal, pops in the game winner for Spain. My money is on Germany though to win it all. After the thrashing they gave Argentina, in my mind they got to be the clear favourites at this point to win the WC.

Does anybody else feel like Germany will just dominate Spain? I don’t even see that game being close.

I wanted to see Germany-Brazil, but a friend said that game would be boring. I disagree and think Germany would have dominated.

I don’t see Germany losing to be honest. Germany-Spain should be great.

Is there a site that…

  1. streams lives games? (other than Univision)
  2. hosts previously played matches like Uruguay-Ghana?

I missed the Uruguay-Ghana game :frowning:

Yes.

It’ll be Netherlands vs. Germany final if all goes well. (I.e. Urugauy don’t cheat again)

That will be a good game.

Unfortunately I see Spain falling to Germany, unfortunately for me anyway.

I believe they stream games on ESPN3, or so they’ve been saying during games.

Sorry,I had to wrok today so I couldnt commentate the matches live but I am so happy Germany won. The intense rivalry between Maradona and Schweinsteiger made it even sweeter. I feel that the German mentality of soccer is closely align the Americans.

Thanks Andy

I’m better today, altho the World Cup is basically dead to me.

Truth is we had our asses handed to us time and time again, and Germany played brilliantly - so there’s nothing to say except, congrats. Germany really did play spectacular soccer and Argentina was no match.

Lets see how the rest of the cup pans out.

ESPN3 is streaming the games, but the quality is shitty and it keeps buffering. Univision is just good… plus the announcers there put some EMOTION into the game (it helps that I speak Spanish too)

Also I think Univision.com has all the games saved so you can rewatch them.

About Suarez - I don’t understand how anyone can back his actions. Does sportsmanship exist anymore? The guy looked like he was playing volleyball, it wasn’t an incidental handball like Harry Kewell.

Better to lose with honour, than cheat to win.

Oh and I just read he made some stupid ass comment at the post game conference that he has the new “hand of god” and he made the “save of the tournament”

What a jackass.

bullshit… the man did a move in desperation. His action was no guarantee of winning the game. If you remember he was crying after it, because he was red carded and now Ghana had a free penalty kick, with seconds left on the clock. In short the game was lost, I thought it was lost, everyone though it was lost…

But as fate would have it, Ghana missed the shot!

…and the game continued

Only the USA and Germany seem understand and uphold those values.

Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and their South American colonies seem to think every thing goes and doing whatever it takes for your country to win is ok as long as you cry.

Yes, crying for you country after an act of diarrhoea really makes you look honorable.

I agree with this. His actions were instinctual, purely a reaction, and he was punished accordingly with the red card and subsequent penalty kick. It is unfortunate that there is no “goal tending” rule like in the NBA, where the goal would have simply counted, but it is what it is.

Ghana was given the chance to capitalize, and they simply couldn’t. Even in extra time with an extra man, they couldn’t put one in. His actions weren’t dirty or preconceived, and I think that’s what makes this different.

I think the rules are what should be examined, as any player can do what he did, accept the punishment, and give his team another chance to survive.

Like I said, you play to win the game, and his decision ultimately lead his team to victory.

You have been playing a game called FOOT ball for at least 20 years and switching to a volleyball action is a PURE instinctual reaction? Jesus Christ.

Maybe there is something wrong with soccer after all, in that it attracts people who do whatever it takes to win simply because mother FIFA let’s them get away with it.

I think I am going to start watching American football instead, even though their uniform is gay, because I want to see if this kind of dodging the rules to win takes place or whether they play to win without instinctively abandoning sports ethics.

Agreed.

It may be instinctual for someone who plays casual “soccer”, but it will be engrained into someone who plays the sport every day of their lives… for a living.

It was not instinct, it was intentional - he knew exactly what he was doing expecially since he had a few seconds to consider what was happening.

I think you misunderstood what I said earlier Alpha - I agree completely that Suarez’s actions were terrible. They were worse than cheating. If kids see that kind of behaviour, and see the fact that he only got a 1 match ban, then there’s no hope for sportsmanship and pride in the game.

I still do stand by the statement that (knowing what he knew) what he did was genius. I’ll always hate him for it, but he somehow - within a millisecond - put his team from a position of defeat to a position of victory.

I wish that rules were different. In instances like that, either referee discretion, or perhaps a blanket rule which states something to the effect that “If, otherwise for the foul, a goal would have been a certainty then a goal should be allowed.”

No person on earth could claim that the ball wasn’t heading into the back of the net. The only thing that prevented it going in was Suarez’s cheating little filthy hands - the goal should therefore stand.

But FIFA haven’t exactly shown wisdom when it comes to goal line decisions, has it?

In rugby you can get a penalty try. In cricket you can be given out for obstruction etc. Football is still languishing.

I agree with these guys.
