World Cup 2010 Thread

Italy and France are out early and America has shown up late.

England is taking on the Germans this weekend!
… and Ireland doesn’t take part (but roots for the Germans).

So is that a prediction for a USA/Japan final?
LOL!

Awesome.

The afternoon games today should be epic, as 3 great teams (Chile, Switzerland, Spain) are all alive. I would love to see Spain beat Chile and Switzerland destroy Honduras, make up the goal differential, and move into the next stage.

Uhh… yeah, 'cos that’s what happened

Classy goal by David Villa.

That was an awesome strike from 50 yards out. With the addition of Iniesta’s goal, Spain looks to be in the drivers seat. Now we need a goal from the Chocolatiers!

Portugal and Spain should set the way for a classic " divefest". I used to think the Italians were the ultimate cheats, divers on the pitch, but the Spaniards and more so the Portuguese have surpassed the Italians in that regard. The diving, dirty trickery, cynical fouls from Portugal in this World Cup has been quite remarkable.

It’s part of the game and happens every year, in every tournament, and in every league. It’s terrible for us spectators to have to watch it, especially when a majority of the replays show so little contact and such dramatic responses, but it’s hard to blame the players when the reward can be so high.

Only one or two players have been given yellows for diving, while countless others have earned free kicks, PK shots, and yellows for opposing players, all of which are of tremendous aid in going for the win.

The bottom line is that the rewards far outweigh the risks, and until that changes, we are going to be forced to see countless academy award winning performances.

we always have pool for everything, superbowl, nascar race each week and for the season, major league and ncaa baseball. finally got one for the world cup at $100 each person, winner take all. I drew Germany and Brazil so I feel pretty good. do any of you serious fans play in pools, or do you refuse to so you won’t be conflicted about rooting for someone you hate?

I love to bet sports, and that definitely includes pools. I don’t really ever get conflicted though, if a team I had money on was playing my favorite team, I’d root for my favorite team, because then its a win/win either way.

That’s some good luck that you drew Brazil and Germany, you must be pretty happy with that.

Rooting for the asian teams here. Sucks that africans are out except Ghana -which the US will probably knock silly this evening. I like their football a lot, def. more then the Europeans - either they’re boring (England, Germany) or cheating twats (Italy, Portugal).
Interestingly enough, they sell tomorrow’s game here as a “classic”, when it’ll be a snoozefest.
BTW, Germany wins this one 6:5 (you know what I mean).

Goddam vuvuzelas are making me mentally irregular, makes me wish I had an uber air horn to blow in their ears.

I think I’ve come to grips with them now, I don’t love them, but if I were to watch a World Cup game now and they weren’t there I think I would feel a little off.

LETS GO USA!!!

What are people doing to watch the game? Where? How much booze will be involved?

Watching at home. No booze as I am tending bar tonight :(.

Was at Phoenix Landing in Boston for the Algeria game just found a vid of the place when Donovan scored his goal:

Atmosphere there was ridiculous. They were full around 8:30.

lol, that gave me chills

GO USA!!!

Ghana scored!

PS why do all the commentators keep going on about Africa. Ghana =/ Africa
Bambi wrote:

Because they are romantics.

( “Ghana is representing the whole of Africa = carrying all of Africa’s hopes on their shoulders”, bla, bla, more fluff, bla, bla, bla…)

COME ON USA!

Africa is a broken continent

/africa discussion.

Now back to the world cup, come on USA!

I like the USA cheer: “USA ain’t nothin’ ta fuck with!” Sorta like, “We’re not the worst! We’re not the worst!”

Off to do some cardio while watching the second half. I expect the US will come up with something, but it should be a good half. Friggin’ ABC doesn’t let you watch its games online…
