World Cup 2010 Thread

Hope North Korea dominate. Shame no one back home will be able to watch them ROFL

With all the adverts on the t.v and the decorations in the shops, this world cup is like fucking christmas over here.

Anyways, England will be out at quarter finals, like always. All the idiots will be upset, getting drunk, being violent in the street, crying, shouting out incoherent shit etc. Great fun.

USA did pretty good last world cup and overcame a lot of expectations, I think if the US supported football like they do with their other sports, they’d win the world cup most of the time. I’ll be interested to see where they go this time, I’m thinking semi-finals.

That said, Brazil will win.

Just to be clear to anyone NOT from North America, should we refer to it as football or soccer in the future in this thread. I get the feeling everytime we over here call it soccer you folks over there want to poke us in the eye with an ice pick…am I wrong?

Also, even if I don’t watch alot of the games…correction, matches, it wil be enormously entertaining for me just to read here all the slang terms you use. “she’s ugly as a blind cobblers thumb” killed me lolz.

Did those of you suggesting Argentina will win actually watch their qualifying? It was far from impressive, Maradona doesn’t seem to understand how to balance a team and Messi rarely gets the same kind of support that he enjoys at Barca.

I am picking Argentina as previously noted, but I am in complete agreement with you. I think it is absurd that Maradona is still coaching this team. He was one of the best ever to play the game, but he has shown that those skill have not translated into coaching ability.

He seems more interested in fueling his ego with publicity moves than actually coaching or planning for games.

I just hope Messi, who is the best in the game right now hands down, can overcome the terrible coach that they have at the helm.

Correct.

Just to clarify, Tevez IS in the starting team for Argentina I was wrong about that. However, Zanetti and Cambiaso, possibly their two best defenders, are not.

They overcame expectations by not making it out of their group? Someone else on this thread mentioned that the US will surprise England with Dempsey, Altidore, and Donovan…3 players who played in England this season. Of course Donovan was only their for a short time, but those are 3 players who England will probably know the best.

I’d be happy with the US making it to the second round.

I would like to the the U.S. do well, I just feel that they are behind in some areas. The same way kids here start throwing a baseball at a young age, the same is true of a soccer ball in these other countries. But I think they can advance themselves a bit.

Argentina is grouped among weak teams, I don’t see them having any problem moving forward into the tournament.

This is what I love about the World Cup, there are so many good teams, it is really hard to predict a winner. The European and South American teams are always very strong, let the good times begin.

I’m going for Brazil. Fabiano, Kaka and Co. will be ready to hoist the trophy. Kaka needs to stay healthy though for Brazil to have a good chance. Dunga at the helm is a good choice.[/quote]

Well, I made a healthy kaka about 10 minutes ago. Seriously, if your last name translates into English as “shit” why not use one of your other names?

I think the winner will come from Italy, Brazil, Argentina and Spain. I would love to see the U.S. do well, but with so many key players coming off of injury and not fully fit, I just don’t see it this year. I wouldn’t be too surprised if they collapse and don’t make it out of their group due to another wtf loss.

His ego and what he does to that team actually makes me sad. As much as I want England to win if Messi had a good enough tournament to overcome Maradona I think Argentina would definitely deserve the trophy. As someone else said I think they will miss Cambiasso as well, he had a great season at Inter.

I think the best the US can realistically expect is to make it out of their group. They are probably a little better than Algeria, but a good portion of their team isn’t fully fit and Donovan is decent but nowhere near a good enough player to carry a team on the world stage. Altidore could barely get games at Hull (I mean really? Hull?) and Dempsey is at best a mediocre player and didn’t deputize well when Zamora was injured (2 goals in 13 appearances in Europe). If this is the fearsome American attack they must be set to struggle. The only way they will even compete against England is if we beat ourselves, which (fingers-crossed) seems to happen less often under Capello.

Try out some cockney rhyming slang. It is beautiful.

Trouble and strife = wife. Lol!

As for colloquial/slang terms to do with footy:

Kicking a ball = lacing it (hitting it hard with the top part!), punting it (smacking it hard, not necessarily with technique), twatting it (hitting it really hard), launching it (launching it), booting it (you get it)

nutting the ball = heading it.

nutting a dodgy italian = zidane

Skinning someone = outskilling/outmatching them in any fashion (even strength etc)

There’s much more but its a friday and I’m nearly off work so I can’t think too hard …

FFS mate stop pandering to the yanks. I made the thread so we’re going with football. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a poofy prick.

Why the fuck would anyone want Italy to win? For one they play football that’s as dull as a countingbeans post. They cheat like fuck as well. I think UEFA should have barred them from European competition after that Juventus pish.

So glad Republic of Ireland are nowhere to be seen as well. Watching all those Celtic supporters supporting the ‘motherland’ would just get right on my bristols.

^Fook off bruddha’.

Anyone who posts in this thread is a little girly fairy soccer nerd. … Wait, Oh SHIT.

Also Mods, please change the thread title to World Cup Soccer. This could have been about tennis, or sailing or something. Make sure you label it SOCCER.

kthxbye

Because I was actually born and raised in Holland I will say Holland. But so far they have yet to win. Hopefully this time it will be different.
