I have lived in Heidelberg, Germany for the past five years and hope to stay here longer. Being both an American and a Soldier I have no idea where people are getting this “anti-american” nonsense from.
Maybe the German’s you hear about that hate us is because some young stupid kids come over fresh from the farm, never been away from Mommie, and decide to tear the country side up and have no damn respect for the German people, country and culture. Wouldn’t you want people like that out of your country?
The US is turning over bases to the German Government and re-locating troops back to the US. Many reasons for this that can’t be discussed here. Suffice to say that we will continue to maintain a sizable force here in Europe. We just don’t need as many troops and bases here that we currently have. What we do need is to modernize the main bases we have (Ramstein for example) so we can have on one base what we used to have on three.
The current agenda for the Army is to stream line units and make them more modular. Our current structure isn’t what we need any more. A lighter more agile force, capable of deploying to any location to whip the shit out of someone at a moments notice is the end state.
And for the record, we don’t fucking withdraw from anywhere! We may downsize, we may re-locate, we may even pack our bags and go home…but we never withdraw.
Just want to punctuate something drilldaddy said. Europeans don’t hate us. Like anybody else, treat them with respect and they respond in kind. Based on my time there (as a civilian) I think that, on balance, our military personnel are far better ambassadors of goodwill than the legions of swaggering loud-talking tourists who stride through Europe like they own the joint.

I’m not jumping on the bandwagon dude, but, while yes there are very few women that don’t shave the pits over here, 98% do. I have to honestly say that European women are some the finest I have ever seen. The fact that they aren’t hung up on societies (US) views of sexuality and nudity makes them even more attractive.
