No, it doesn’t. Momentum is the product of the mass of an object and the time rate of change of that object’s position, which is known as velocity. It can be thought of as a representation of the force required to reduce the velocity of the object to zero. Now, gaining momentum implies acceleration, since in a system without varying mass, you will need a change in velocity, but you can and will have momentum without any acceleration.
In political terms, this means that both candidates have momentum, but are not necessarily gaining or losing momentum depending on how you look at it. Obama has definitely lost momentum in the last weeks, but has not given up and is not being completely dominated and so his momentum would be lower then a few weeks ago, but not zero. Romney has surged in the polls, but they have stabilized for the most part over the last week or so and so he has a significant amount of momentum, in that it will take a good deal of effort on Obama’s part to beat him, but he may not be gaining momentum, which would mean further boosts in his poll numbers.

I should have said that momentum implies acceleration IN POLITICS.
When someone says “the Patriots have momentum,” they mean that the Patriots are going to make gains. They’re accelerating. Four minutes from now they’re going to have more points than they have now.
How about we make a bet right now on how close Silver will be?

10,000 bucks?
Sure, why not. I bet he gets at least 47 states right.
Getting 47 states right means what? You said he only missed one state last time. I bet I can pick 47 states correctly. If this man is the guru you say he is he ought to be able to at least match what he did last time.

Obama is trying to play this storm as his October surprise. “Look at me I am sooooo very Presidential, I care about people, look I am addressing the nation I am telling people to be safe…I am a caring President.” When in fact we know he only cares about the person who looks back at him in the mirror. Is that overly harsh Mufasa? Okay he cares about his family and a hand full of others.
Anyway what this huge storm has done is most likely prevent any October surprise that he was going to launch. And this makes me very close to giddy.

Well, if he does get 47 right, theres a pretty good chance Obama will be President (obviously depending on which 47). So if I were you I’d hope he gets more like 44 or 43 right.

Me too I really feel it isn’t as close as some of the polls are making it
I’m getting that feeling also, kevinm1…

Even in my sate of Ma a Dem stronghold, I see a lot of Scott Brown Romney Ryan signs, more than I’ve seen of Warren, or even Obama. In fact I see more '08 Obama bumper stickers than 12 ones. Again that’s just me looking around I’m by no means a pollster.

Meanwhile without media attention, Romney quietly helps the places that will be affected by Sandy.
That’s what Mitt Romney is all about, he’s helped many people. Not many realize that he has had the same people around him for 25-35 years. Smart folks like that don’t hang around that long unless they’re working for someone with integrity who is treating them right. I bet Donald Trump turns over employees faster than McDonalds does hamburgers. It’s a shame that in our political environment one candidate tries to tear the other down by attacking his character. Some people actually bought into the “Romney is a rich evil guy” nonsense.
Some rich guys are nasty, just like some poor guys are nasty…

I know I’ve actually really learned a lot about Romney the last two months or so since the conventions and debates, like his righr hands man is actually a woman and has been with him 30yrs, but the media hammered him with the binders comment, meanwhile the Obama administration has less female employees than Romney pressently and pays them less than the men but the republicans have a war on women. Also one of Romney’s neighbors was in s horrible accident and the Romney’s paid for the modifications to their house and this being around Christmas brought them presents. I’m surprised at how much he had done and how badly the media spin has been

The media has done more damage to themselves over the past four years than anyone could possibly do to them. They began by not vetting Obama, and for four years refused to ask him tough questions. If anyone wants to know why Romney took Obama apart in their first debate they need only look at the way Obama has been pampered by the main stream liberal media for four years. And no doubt his top advisors don’t tell him anything he does not want to hear. They did him no favors because when he met up with Romney he was not prepared. Now the media feels it’s their job to do everything in their power to get him reelected.
The media has been biased for many years, but it was only a slant. There were no rabid drooling liberals like Chris Matthews screaming at the TV camera about how bad republicans are. This is a brand new phenomenon over the past several years. Honestly, I have no idea where they go from here. I have never seen such a biased media in my entire life.
