Why DON'T You Workout?

A friend of mine was planning on working out with his wife. They did ONE workout together and then she quit. Her reason?

“Exercise isn’t for everyone”.

Dumb ASS.

You want to be a better you?

DONT IMPORVE YOUR:
chess skills, fencing skills, typing, stamp collecting, video game skills, reading, jogging, gymnastic, fishing/hunting …the list goes on

DO:
LIFT FUCKING WEIGHTS…it makes you better at EVERYTHING/LIFE.

If I was a chess team coach I would have my kids doing squats atleast once a week, and those kids would be better chess players for it.

So yeah, I’ll look down on people who dont lift weights, It’s not my fault they chose the more worthless hobbie(s) that makes them better at only that one thing

You’re retarded.

Not everyone.

Some guys are naturally very lean at normal weight with little to no physical activity.

I have a couple friends like that, who couldn’t care less about such pursuits. They don’t want to be bigger either.
This describes the majority of people that I know. This sort seems to branch into two categories–the first is by far the larger and consists of those who, as many here say, don’t have “the time” or don’t like working very hard physically (and, in many cases, mentally for that matter). That I don’t have a whole lot of sympathy for.

Those in the other category, which probably makes up some 90% of the males at my school (fwiw, it’s an ivy league grad school, so I guess it’s just embodying the stereotype), are of a different sort. Sure, many of them don’t enjoy physical exertion at this point (most are 120lb, pasty-faced wealthy white males), but that’s because many of them have centered themselves around mental exertion that’s extremely comparable to the sort of time, effort, and thought that we put into physical training. That I can respect, of course, and I even think of it as another form of “training”–just not physical. Whether it’s been with running or now with lifting, I train my balls off every day. When I look at them, I see them training their balls off every day as well–perhaps not with the immediate intensity that I exhibit during a session, but the steady pounding away at very complex problems is nonetheless inspiring.

And it’s just not the case that everybody would like to look better. For some people, certain problems or topics (religious, academic, policy-oriented, etc) can literally come to engross some to the degree that something like appearance, beyond basic health concerns, is pretty secondary. Put another way, they don’t wake up in the morning wanting to make themselves better–they wake up wanting to solve some problems that are larger than they are.

Again, not common, but there are enough of these people that they deserve acknowledgment.

A very large percentage of people with graduate degrees exercise regularly (something like 85%), but I truly wonder how many of them actually Train. The former category would be, e.g., the tons of 20-30 year old males who run one marathon a year in 4:30 and stay in “shape” to do that, while the latter category would be those who really hit their training hard (to use the marathon as an example, a 20-30 year old male who runs near the 3 hour mark).

I like playing chess… don’t diss it lol

I agree that lifting improves many if not all areas of life, but if you think reading is as insignificant as stamp collecting (or even insignificant at all), you are extremely stupid.

No insult intended to the stamp-collectors of T-Nation.

Why the hell don’t you wana be stronger?

I’m sure there will be a day when you’ll have to move a washing machine or a sofa or a fridge and you’ll be disappointed with yourself.

I just don’t understand how every able bodied person who can afford it doesn’t work out.
I see guys walking around 230-250 pounds of muscle and i’m thinking to myself.

Why do you lift heavy things only to put it right back down?
Does he wear man thongs to show his glutes?
Does he use a luffa to wipe his ass?

Are you saying guys who don’t work out are weak?.. Because i know guys that work out and they’re still weak.
Are you saying there are no other ways to look better?
Are you saying there are no other methods to being healthier ?..

As an undergrad i moved a couple times and never had to move a washing machine or a fridge.

People don’t work out because it’s not beneficial to anything they want to accomplish in life, it’s that simple.

Not really the response you expected eh? Sorry to break it to you man but the majority of the posters are right. Some people just dont give a fuck about this shit and have other interests that for them will make a “better you”.

If all the great presidents and influential people of the world trained 5x a week, timed their meals and wathced their carb intakes, this world would be a shit hole.

We should worry about ourselves and not look down on 125lb “grown men”. Trust me, I think that would actually make US BETTER people.

Dude, the world is a shit hole!

Again i wasn’t talking about people who watch carb intake, and time meals or even train 5 times a week. I was talking about average who does an hour 3 times a week.

I’m pretty sure Obama hits the eliptical in the white house every morning and has a nutritionist.

Sarcasm detector broken, I suppose.

Also, the bro-science is heavy in this thread again…

mfw 400+lbs dead-lifts are unhealthy
mfw fat is the dietary culprit (Starbucks example)
mfw when being heavier than 90.7kg is unhealthy
mfw eating 4,000 calories is unhealthy

To bring a sense of balance. It’s almost like some guys loose their sense of reality after spending a certain amount of time on this site. I’m 90 percent sure that the thoughts going through your head when you see a skinny guy, is the reason YOU lift weights. (you want to be stronger and healthier, you believe it makes you look better and you might have to lift a fridge or sofa one day)

You choose weight lifting to accomplish these goals for yourself. Another person may be able to achieve all of the above by choosing another hobby. Maybe the things that are significant to you may not be as significant to them. They might decide to eat a balance diet and play basketball as a way of maintaining health. They might just hire a moving company to help with the fridge. They may already be pleased with the way they look. In that case why lift weights?

The title says workout but your inquires on strength seems to put the focus specifically on weightlifting. Show me one muscular doctor and i will show you 10 muscular NFL players. It’s about priorities and whats important to you.

Is a doctor or a chemical engineer lazier that an NFL player? How would you gauge that? The doctor spent hours every night in med school, pulling all nighters to ace that test. Skipping the parties and the gym to write lab reports. The NFL player woke up at 5 every morning to make it to practice, spending hours on the field to perfect his sport. Skipping parties so he could get adequate sleep for recovery.

The doctor doesn’t lift weights becaus it doesn’t make him a better physician, the NFL does because it makes him a force on the field.

Yes exactly, you just made it sound like fat/lard were the culprits.

I couldn’t care less what interests people have.

Just don’t don’t talk smack about someone who is superior to you in their interests, then take it personal when they question your inferiority in that same activity.

The catch 22 is whether or not your question hits a nerve. If it does, then clearly there is more to it than just having “no interest in working out”. Those are the people I am clueless about. If your weakness bothers you, then why not change it?

People like to be better in what they already are good at. That’s a given. They won’t pursue improvements to weak points if they don’t have the time/motivation to put in outside of doing what they are already good at.

I can see Marzouk’s point. Sometimes I question how some guys can be +6’0", weigh no more 140 lbs and be proud to wear skinny jeans and a ‘tight’ t-shirt to show off their ‘impressive’ physique. What actually motivates them to continue living this way if it does indeed bother them?

Ye they are the kind of ppl i was talking about, i am buy no means saying we are superior to people who don’t work out. I just didn’t understand why people wouldn’t reap the rewards of it.

I love working out and my family, especially my Mom always asks, “how much bigger are you gonna get” or “why you always at the gym”. I’m there because I like lifting, it feeds my soul and I don’t get on anyone else’s case about what they do or their interests. I do it for me and me alone.

You’ve made 261 posts on a lifting site and don’t work out? I’m guessing you spend a lot of time in the tilf threads…
