When in May are you heading over there? I’ll be in London mid-May
Its looking like 20th thru the 27th
Gotcha … I’ll be in York and the Lake’s district that time …
Would love to go to Scotland but that’s not in the cards this trip
I’ve not done Glenfiddich but they do a nice drop, so going there would make sense. I’ve been to the one in Oban, small place but an interesting tour, the whiskey is outstanding too, it’s a bit out of your way though!
I have done the BrewDog Brewery just north of Aberdeen (Ellon) and can recommend that! They also have a bar/pub in the middle of Aberdeen which makes a decent watering hole.
In Aberdeen itself - Old Aberdeen is worth mooching about for a bit, Slains Castle and the Maritime Museum are decent. I’d recommend Footdee as well, lovely/pretty traditional fishing area by the coast on the outskirts of Aberdeen.
Dunottar Castle, half hour south of Aberdeen is a ‘must-see’ in my opinion and try and drive into the Cairngorns if you have time (which you can do going from Aberdeen to Inverness).
I’m not sure how much time you have but the Highlands are stunning, particularly around Glencoe/Oban/Fort William but I’m thinking that might not fit into your schedule!
Thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for.
Agreed. Trying to do a lot but with limits. As it is, I’m already scared shitless about driving left! ![]()
Termoli is Awesome but I prefer Vieste. Never visited Rotello and santa croce di magliano.
I think this is similar to any big city in most parts of the world. Your level of enjoyment is directly related to your social standing or what you earn. I am from the UK originally and moved half way across the world to live in Melbourne Australia. Melbourne us often voted as one of the (in not the number 1) best cities in the world to live in. People here often ask me what London is like and my response is simple. If the sun is shining and you have money in your pocket it is one of the best places on earth to be. But at any other time and if you are working there or living there its not that great.
Sorry stud, my time in Scotland is normally spent boozing or at the golf. @yorkshireiron has it covered for you. Enjoy your trip.
I remember Billy Connolly telling a story about when he lived in LA and took his kids to Scotland so they could see his homeland. He hired a camper van and toured the Highlands and showed them salmon leaping from rivers, big antlered stags on the Highlands, mist covered mountains etc.
When the holiday finished he asked them what the best part about the holiday was and they said “Sesame Street”. The camper van had a video in it.
There’s some appeal to having to look up the temperature before leaving the apartment in the morning. Put on the wrong pair of protective trousers/overalls, or a slightly less padded jacket, or not enough pairs of gloves, and run the risk of hypothermia. Temperature changes have been wild here in recent years. It used to be consistent.
It has the same appeal as shaving with a blade. Everything else in life is put into perspective.
I lived in Leeds for 15-years. Great city, loads of stuff to do, plenty of greenery not too far away and other major northern cities are within a quick driving distance.
Moved to Harrogate after that for 2-years. That is a lovely place, however, it’s far too expensive to live. When porsche’s, maserati’s, aston martins and bentley’s are 10 a penny you know it’s going to push house prices up.
I now live about 3-miles from the coast in the North West, near Lytham St. Anne’s. It’s a bit like Harrogate but on the coast but I’m far enough away to not be affected by the high house prices they experience.
Long live the north!
I wouldn’t be surprised if you could fly from London to Edinburgh for the same or less cost and a tenth of the time.
I travel to Leeds for work fairly frequently. Seems a good place, though my experience is mostly based on the Crowne Plaza Hotel and surrounding area.
If my missus could get work over there I’d move to the north of England in a heartbeat. Having grown up in London and now living in Dublin, it seems like a luxurious paradise where everything costs pennies.
You’re probably right but it’s kind of our way to see the country. Plus train travel is pretty much non existent in Texas so it should be new for all of us
For next time you stay there, I’d highly recommend paying a visit to Veeno nearby, either for dinner, a glass of wine or both. (If you haven’t already!)
Yeah, people moan about the cost of living in London. From what I’ve heard Dublin is worse!!! I used to go to a networking meeting every Wednesday at the Crowne Plaza (on Wellington Street) so I’ve got no fond memories of that hotel! Ha
London is worse at the top end but day-to-day it’s about even. If I could earn as much as I do here in a place where I wasn’t spending >€1500 on rent that would be fairly ideal. Will be nicer when/if we buy.
I would have had the opportunity to move to Leeds but my fiancée is a teacher and doesn’t want to work in the UK which is more than reasonable.
Sorry for bumping an old post… but this is very true, my close friend left to the military a week ago… supposedly he’s getting 60 grand for one year there! Thats ENTRY level, first year pay!!! That’s very good money for him (18 years of age)… however they aren’t as good as they used to be, they’re draconian now… they piss test you MANY times each year, even test for PED’s of all kinds (based on WADA code)… if you’re a smoker… you’re out, thats no longer allowed in the military here… no real access to phones during the 3 months of basic training… Not sure if this is everywhere, but it seems they’re going a bit too far… If on certain medications (like an SSRI) or you have a history of any kind of psychiatric ailment (for me reactive depression)… you’re out… They’re starting to trial hair testing too
That being said, I’d’ve joined in a heartbeat if I’d qualified, it’s like being payed to work out!
