*edit List included now About Tea Party | Tea Party

Hate is such a strong term.

I understand that environmentalists and the EPA are out of control. But I live on a lake, and an eagle lives nearby. The lake and the eagle don’t put any money in my pocket, but they add some “value” (utility, or something?) to my life.

I just feel that the Tea Party doesnt get the same value, or utility from lakes and eagles that I do.

I used to live close to Lake Erie, and a dirty steel mill. Down South, I’m fairly close to some coal mines, so I can’t really get down with abolishing the EPA. It’s messed up being a blind tree-hugger though. The Keystone Pipeline would probably reduce pollution, and lead to less fracking in the U.S.

I don’t see “prohibit protection of the environment” anywhere on that list. What am I missing here?

Personally, I don’t hate them. #14 seems a bit over reactionary but… Whatever.

Mostly the Tea Party stands for what America used to stand for. People hate it because it has been demonized by the left wing media.

15 Non-negotiable Core Beliefs

Politics is inherently concerned with compromise. The Tea Party draws so much ire because it is constituted by self-righteous maximalist ideologues. They don’t want to remodel a house with good bones - they want to burn it down. Scorched earth popularism will only be detrimental to the nation.

  1. Illegal aliens are here illegally.

No disagreement from me.

  1. Pro-domestic employment is indispensable.

Manufacturing jobs aren’t returning to the United States. Barriers to trade that keep such industries artificially alive are empirically detrimental to domestic welfare. The US should base its economic goals on comparative advantage.

  1. A strong military is essential.
This isn’t a value exclusive to the Tea Party. Hilary Clinton for example has championed this belief on multiple occasions. Hard power Democrats and Republican are a dime a dozen in the so called establishment.

  2. Special interests must be eliminated.
Why? Lobbyists are entitled under the first amendment to use their money as they see fit.

  3. Gun ownership is sacred.

Man possesses an inherent right to self-defense.

  1. Government must be downsized.

The growing complexity and breadth of domestic and international issues, along with a growing population, require that government proportionally expand, no more and no less.

  1. The national budget must be balanced.

This conflicts with number three. Defense economists have long posited that a globe trotting forward deployed military requires deficit spending.

  1. Deficit spending must end.

See number seven.

  1. Bailout and stimulus plans are illegal.

How so? They are important, even vital tools of macroeconomic policy. TARP for example was essential to the recovery of the US economy.

  1. Reducing personal income taxes is a must.

Why? They should ebb and flow with macroeconomic policy.

  1. Reducing business income taxes is mandatory.

Why? They should ebb and flow with macroeconomic policy.

  1. Political offices must be available to average citizens.

No, it shouldn’t. Political offices should be reserved for the best and brightest. Politics should not devolve to populism. The average American is ignorant of the rudimentary basics of domestic and foreign policy, and the United States should not be guided by a popularity contest.

  1. Intrusive government must be stopped.

No arguments from me there. What constitutes intrusive is up for debate.

  1. English as our core language is required.

It is the de facto language of the United States, and the international lingua franca. The US needs to invest heavily in strategic languages, however.

  1. Traditional family values are encouraged.

The traditional conception of the nuclear family needs to evolve with the times. Its strengths should be retained, however. The US is not a Christian nation and should not base its policies on Christian religious sensibilities.

Any nut can be a Tea Party candidate. And when the media finds that nut they display him for the world to see. When a Democrat says something dumb it is unreported.

Tea Party is the best hope to fix the mess, but they need to vet their spokespeople better.

What do you have against domes?

[quote]countingbeans wrote:

And counterproductive. The government should encourage and provide opportunities for primary and secondary students to study strategically important and widely used foreign languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Farsi, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish or Urdu.

Or because it’s a hapless and myopic anachronism.

Since when does “back of the bus” mean “eliminate and kill all eagles and pollute all lakes”?

Seems to me, the Tea Party is a small government type of people, and if the Farmer wants to preserve his eagles, he and his neighbors should be the small government they want and have his local ordinances protect that lake and eagle nest.

I’m the furthest thing from anti-environmental regulation, because I know assholes are out there. But the EPA isn’t above reproach here.

These things seem rather basic to me. And since we’ve wondered from them we do seem to be worse off:

  1. Illegal aliens are here illegally.
  2. Pro-domestic employment is indispensable.
  3. A strong military is essential.
  4. Special interests must be eliminated.
  5. Gun ownership is sacred.
  6. Government must be downsized.
  7. The national budget must be balanced.
  8. Deficit spending must end.
  9. Bailout and stimulus plans are illegal.
  10. Reducing personal income taxes is a must.
  11. Reducing business income taxes is mandatory.
  12. Political offices must be available to average citizens.
  13. Intrusive government must be stopped.
  14. English as our core language is required.
  15. Traditional family values are encouraged.

I have a problem with the fact that most of the tea party people I know are, in fact, government employees. I live near a large military base and there is a fairly large group of them who work there. I have told them before that I am all for downsizing government if we start by eliminating their job first. They aren’t really into that. Hmmmmm.

[quote]Bismark wrote:

But the biology of how a family is created hasn’t (yet, anyway) evolved.

Me, 1 eagle and some hippies from the local college against Eastman Chemical, Alpha Natural Resources, the TVA, and all the local tabacco farmers?

If I lived down in Brownsville, TX, I would probably be more excited about the Tea Party.

I am more concerned with the Obama Administration not prosecuting wind farms who kill eagles, all in the name of green energy. Looks like that comes with a hint of red.

You would think this would come from a Republican administration.
