Not a knock on you, @fitafter40, since I hear many people say this (and wear it on their t-shirts, hats, etc.) but how many Americans would actually live by this?
How many Americans actually have a single clue about what it means to not have freedoms? How many actually have even the slightest idea about what’s it like to actually fight for freedoms? How many of them think they’d stand a chance with their camo jackets and hunting rifles if the government actually used the full extent of our military and/or law enforcement against us?
I don’t know what my point is. Just a rant. I just saw some local guy’s FB account saying he’d rather die on his feet than live on his knees, or something like that, probably posted from his Apple iPhone, wearing his Nike shoes, and watching his sports games from his recliner in his air conditioned house.
I just don’t believe that any of us have a clue what it means to actually live out what a lot of us say.
Maybe @dt79 could expand. I think you’ve said something similar regarding the attitude many Americans have about wearing masks.
True. A lot of self labeled pro freedom people won’t even violate a state mask order. What’s the likelyhood they’d have the balls to fight against a violent tyranny?
I’ve never said anything about Americans and their attitudes towards wearing masks. I think anything I said that could be relevant was that in certain parts of Asia, lots of people wear masks when they have the common flu so it’s not as hard for them to be compliant with the mask wearing during the COVID outbreak.
EDIT:
I’ve spoken about the concept of “freedom” in general and how people somehow lost the idea that it comes with certain responsibilities and this freedom can easily be taken away if we take it for granted.
You’ve all seen how your own country was able to execute existing State powers that a lot of people didn’t think was possible because they’ve never actually read up on the laws pertaining to these.
There are things worth fighting for, things that aren’t, and things that are just too silly to be equated to this.
I wouldn’t stop wearing a mask outside even if it wasn’t mandated by law. Would I be considered being compliant to the State once it gets mandated or would I just going about my day as usual?
“Doug says he’s pro freedom but there he is putting his kid in a car seat like the liberal pussy he must be!”
Thank god the don’t tread on me people are making their stand on a simple face covering and not pants. It’s been a tough time for these people. “Ok I think I’m having a heart attack. I should call 911. But as I recover they may want me to wear a mask at some point for my health and safety. The tyranny is too much to bear. Do I call them and let the jackbooted thugs win or do I just let myself die here knowing I did it for freedom!”
You’re missing my point. Im not debating the mask thing, it’s been done to death already on these forums. Pro freedom people that are anti mask talk a big game, but when push comes to shove they’re wearing the damn things. I question the resolve of those who can’t stand for what they believe even when it’s easy.
You know what’s insane to me? The fact that anti-maskers existed 100 years ago during a much more serious viral pandemic. Disease severity is not enough to deter these morons. We could have a virus with a 30% fatality rate, and there would still be assholes complaining about how wearing a piece of cloth over their faces constitutes a fundamental violation of their rights. They lack any nuance to their thinking and suffer from paranoid delusions; any mandate from the government, even if its for the public good, is damning evidence totalitarianism is right around the corner.
I get what you’re saying. Everyone has their line where they’re willing to make a stand. I don’t disagree. The other side of that is standing on principle even if it seems inconsequential. But I don’t disagree with you.
And IME, even if people stand up against certain things like mask laws, which have lower consequences for breaking the rules, they normally won’t have the balls to stand up for things which have larger consequences anyway.
Shit, I don’t even have the balls to bitch about my government online and anyone here is free to call me a hypocrite, which I’ve personally acknowledged.
