i really wish rugby players would try on American pads and hit each other…the pads prevent concussions/broken collar bones(notice how the shoulder pads have a spring to them?). Rugby players dont tackle like American football players do. It is that simple. Rugby players are taught how to tackle so they avoid breaking those bones. We just throw on armor so we can do it anyways.
Lol now I wanna watch Any Given Sunday thanks to your comment.
No, I just love the game. My first memory as a child was sitting at my grandfathers feet watching the redskins play. I used to go to his house every sunday, and watch the redskins play. When I was too small to pay attention to the whole game, I would fall asleep at his feet through parts of the game, and wake up when he was screaming at the tv.
Football is a part of American culture. It gives people, families, neighborhoods, something to do and the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than their day to day lives.
P.S. It is gonna be the redskins year this year. =D
Look, all I have to say is you do NOT know pain in sport until you play American FB. I’d put Rugby in the same league, but the dynamics of the two sports are widely different. American football makes the only sport I know where you have to steadfastly stick to your assignment and remain highly disciplined and focused all while being subjected to brutal physical pain, blazing speed and very, very intimidating opponents. I’ve got respect for rugby and soccer, but I have to point out to you rugby players that call FB a pussy sport don’t know WTF you’re talking about. Most American FB fans and players don’t call rugy a pussy sport, so I invite you to strap up and play our game and see how “weak” it really is.

Thats the worst football movie I’ve ever seen in my life. The only football movie that is even remotely close to being that bad is the one with Keanu Reeves, but considering what any given sunday had to work with they completely screwed it up. If you want to watch a good football movie, watch Necessary Roughness, Rudy, The Program, or Friday Night Lights, or the old The Longest Yard.
As far as football or rugby, we had a few aussie foreign exchange students and they thought that football was for pansies because we wore pads. That was until they put the pads on. After that they changed their mind.

Yet again HH as masterminded a fucking pointless thread. He’s not happy with rubbishing soccer, now he wants to compare Rugby with US Fotball.
We will see what Eli has to offer next year. Our division is going to be a definite hot spot next season.
One of the younger guys who worked part time at the gym just left for Westpoint football. This kid id 6’5 250 lbs at 17. Plays linebacker. Gonna be awesome to see how well he does at that level. I told him to definitely see The Program before he leaves =D

American FB players tackle like rugby players when we aren’t wearing pads. But put the pads on and it’s a whole different ballgame. This is something rugby players just can’t truly grasp unless they actually play our sport.

I know that you don’t like HH, but jeez, I was the one who compared rugby to football. I just can’t stand it when people treat football like it’s a religion. It’s just a bloody sport, and there are sports that, in my opinion, are better barometers of a person’s greatness than football. Think about all those kickers and punters stretching their legs for 55 minutes and getting all the credit for winning a game with a time-expired field goal.
But yeah, this thread is pointless. Oh, well. Anyway, the reason why American football players don’t trash rugby is because they think that rugby players are tough for not wearing pads. I get that from football players all the time.
I do find football DANGEROUS, yes. You have people that are essentially human missiles launching towards each other. I don’t find that tough. I find that sissy. Would they be launching themselves like that if they weren’t so well protected? I seriously doubt it. And don’t get me started on what the NHL was before the strike and rule changes made it more than football on skates.
“Any Given Sunday” wasn’t a bad movie. Fun to watch, but it is one of those movies that glorifies the violence in professional football. Jamie Foxx reading the newspaper on the bench as a third-string QB was damn funny, though.
I should admit that I was giddy for a week when Doug Flutie drop-kicked that extra point for the Patriots last season.

Agreed. With the pads and helmets, American football defenders almost instinctively try to “run through” an opponent, accelerating at the point of impact. Rugby defenders without the pads and helmet appear to “let up” at the point of impact for the most part.

Or course they wouldn’t launch themselves like that if they weren’t wearing pads. That would be a stupid. I only find launching oneself “sissy” if they could’ve taken someone down more effectively another way. Oftentimes you have to “lay out” to stop someone though. I’d hardly call that being a sissy.
If it wasnt for American football, Englan would not be world cup champions at rugby. Sir clive woodward paid a visit to the miami dolphins when he first came into charge and it was here he embraced the idea of various coaches to teach certian aspects of the game i.e. a kicking coach, a defence coach, forwards coach etc - These were all unheard of in the pre woodward era.
He pushed the boundries for England and dragged us into the Professional era. In addition i remember several drills ive used that have their roots in US football - such as the triple point stance at the line of scrimmage. I enjoy watching the game but fucking hate adverts every 5 mins.
Its pointless arguing over which game is best, who hits harder etc etc. Game specificity to a large degree dictates playes bodytypes and athletic qualities. A football player would be found gassing in an extended period of Rugby union, a Rugby union player would not be suited to several football positions and both would struggle if dumped into a game of rugby league.
I think rugby union has the capacity to be massive in the states, you just need to develop a few world class players and start pushing teams higher up than you in the rankings. More than any other sport, i see rugby union as the one to challenge your more establised sports in the years to come. Just not yet.
I have landed and taken harder hits than that rugby video during neighborhood games in the park consisting of 14-18 year olds… (playing football with no pads I mean)

This is an important, and one of the only valid points of this whole thread.
I will never bash rugby, because I think it’s a tough as shit game, and I respect anybody who aggressively plays it.
However, without a helmet, a rugby player (unless they have a death wish) has to put their head out of the way, and use their shoulder, when making a hit.
It’s a totally different feeling of recklessness when you sprint full speed at another huge, sprinting individual, and lead with your head…
I love football, but there is nothing about it that makes it any more of a man’s game than rugby or soccer or anything else. All sports are hard, and tough, and challenging.
I have played both Varsity Soccer and Varsity Football, and while football gets me more bruised up, there is nothing harder than sprinting downfield in the 80th minute with some asshole shoulder checking you and your lungs on fire.
Yeah any given sunday was truly horrible…it could never compare to friday night lights, which is my favorite sports movie. Its funny how I am a die-hard football fan and yet my favorite sports movie criticizes the game more than it glorifies it…
Given that in high school I was knocked unconscious for more than a minute, was dragged off the field and given a hard smack on the head by the assistant coach, was told “not to be such a pussy”, and sent back out onto the field, I say fuck football.
Its machismo is for overgrown little boys, not men.
