I work 12 hours per day 6 days a week with a 30 minute break for lunch. The commute to work takes an hour each way. When I get home I have to cook dinner, prepare lunch for the next day (no canteen), do the laundry then straight to bed, where I count down my precious few hours of sleep.
I’ll also add:

-Highest male to female ratio in the world. The few women that are there are either completely covered up or married.

-No alcohol. Enough said

-No gyms. Everyone’s a fat tub of shit.

-No Porn!!! Although there are ways around that.

-Some of the worst traffic in the world.

-Loud prayers at 4.30am

-Hottest place on earth

-Terrible shit infested food. (literally, they wipe their arses using their left hands with no toilet paper) Have been throwing up with stomach pain since I got here.
And also I’m only fucking 23!!!
Sorry for the rant. Welcome to hell.
horrible! Where are you exactly? How long have you been there?

I used to work with a guy (former MP) that went to work for a building contractor doing jobs in Afganistan. Left in 2005. Yes, he had some screws loose. (Hope he’s OK now that I think about him).
I’m in Qatar and have been there for 3 months now. In fairness it’s not as bad as Saudi, which is up there with Afganistan for worst place on earth, but still a harsh place for anyone used to a normal life.
Technically you can get alcohol in the hotels, but it’s such a sorry night out (literally ZERO women) that there’s no point.
Starting to go crazy already, will see if I can survive for a year. The problem is that the pay almost doubles after the first year, to lure people back!

The one job ive worked so far that payed good money was as a maintenance mechanic , but for the 2 years that i did it i wondered …how ‘fun’ is your job supposed to be ? This type of work was pretty dry and really didnt turn me on that much.

In my opinion , just learning stuff at college was probably the funnest and most meaningful thing i have done so far. I think i really just like …learning stuff …and …being ‘in the know.’ Lol.

I went ahead and got a fitness trainer certification but since i dont have any related degree or credentials to go with it im not sure how easy it would be to get a job with anyone . That and i just dont feel, legit- to my–self … just trying to be some random a$$ deuche trainer person without any papers to show that i am smart…If you understand where im coming from.

I want to go back to school but i dont really have any money, so the only way to really get anything done is i just need to do more work. A few people told me i should just get some student loans but my mom says ‘fk that sht.’

Dont take me wrong, people say i am a very hard worker on tasks that dont require tons of thinking or scheming.

I worked for a temp agency for a while and made some green but they pretty much always send you out on assignments where you are working sh1tty 12 hour shifts with some garbage-trash type of job, some of them were ok , but srsly the last job i did where i spent a couple weeks in some big warehouse pulling stuff out of boxes and counting stuff all damn day , that pretty much sucked all of the try-hard out of my soul. It was like death, it took away all of my try-hard.

This guys suggest you stfu and make work easier than trying to find a dream job.

Really, you probably won’t wind up in your dream job. You might…but you probably won’t.

My advice is to find some aspect of your job that you enjoy, and work diligently to get better and better at it. If you wind up leaving the job, your proven performance and experience in this specific aspect of the job may qualify you for a new position that is more in line with your interests.

Also, always give a shit about what you do. Lincoln’s oft-quoted “whatever you are, be a good one” is excellent advice. When you give a shit, you’re assuming an active role over a passive one, the days go quicker and you feel better in general.

<----- See the pic?

Your dream job isn’t going to magically drop out of the sky into your lap.

I busted my ass for 10 years working tons of hours through the weeks and volunteering on top of it.

This just hand it to me entitlement can suck balls!!

I got an offer to go Saudi at years end. The pay is fucking insane for a 8 week on 2 week off rotation - in excess of $200k per annum (12 hour days, 6 days a week) but you live in an on-site camp that pretty much looks like a prison (prison may be a step up actually). I’m somewhat hesitant though, albeit the offer is 6 digits tax free (gotta stay two rotations though!).

Other offer on the table is Mozambique which is much more appealing. Pay is a lot lower (base pay + $140 per day international living allowance) with a potential for a nice little bonus at the end. The corporate benefits kick ass so it isn’t really like I’ll be needing to spend much dough while over there.

Years end for Saudi might be a little soon for me but if I go Mozambique the Saudi deal is still open for next year. While if I choose vice versa, I’m stuck with just Saudi.

Most work is just like that. Here is some that I had a hand in. We made the frames. Before we made the frames, an architectural firm designed it. Then a draftsman made the blueprints. Then each of 6 of us made the frames, piece by piece. Measure, cut, notch, grind, weld. Then the bead work. Measure, cut, grind, and snap into place. Then off to the glaziers. When they get done, the installers put it in place. The place that the builders created for it to be.

Sometimes it is difficult to see how things come to be when you are looking at the whole of something. It is very important and in many ways a skill to be on task and stay on task, item by item, until a project is complete. Total build time on this for us was a couple of weeks. Even the most complex structures and devices that exist in the world today can be and have been broken down into basic but necessary tasks, coordinated into a sequence of stages, in order to be brought into existence.

There is no one person who can say that they built any of this single handed, but about a thousand people who all did their part.

You just have to find your part.

I worked in a Supermarket-come-Gas Station part-time through high-school and college(with full-time hours in the summers). And believe me, unless you have zero respect for yourself, you do not want to end up there for an indefinite time.

You are doing a truly meaningless job for a guy that you hate, and you hate him. Management in these types of jobs are insecure and incompetent assholes. That’s why they will always be in that line of work. The back-stabbing is merciless and people keep you down in any way that they can. Sometimes to protect or justify their own position, sometimes for the hell of it. I was lucky because I was there just to have a little income through my student years and I kept a low profile for the most part.

But that also gave me an opportunity to people watch and when I realised what was really going on, I learned to detest everything about it. I realise that almost every job will carry a strong element of this, but what amazed me is that it happened for the hell of it. The worst culprit’s never seemed to gain anything(more responsibility, promotion etc), they just enjoyed being assholes and meddling in other people’s business.

I’ve known several other student that have said they exact same thing when we discussed.

What really killed me was the management. Insecure and amazingly incompetent, but sneaky as hell. I took the first job I could out of college, another meaningless job but this time for a massive international company(thanks economy) but what do ya know, I really love where I work and although my college degree is in no way related to where I work now, I have great ambitions to work for the company and try my hardest.

Rant(I suppose) over.

200K TAX FREE is no joke! Plus you won’t be spending much so you’ll come out of it a rich man if you go ahead with it. Be aware of the visa set up there though. Once you get your residents permit you are technically owned by the company for 2 years. So if you decide that you’ve had enough you will not be allowed leave the country unless you have your employers permission! Retarded rule but what can you do.
Just have the mindset that you are going to prison (and don’t expect a gym in your camp) for a year or two and you should be ok. And also fuck every woman in sight before you leave!

Become so good they can’t ignore you. You’ll have your autonomy, competence, and relatedness in 5-10 years.

I enjoyed reading that.

“Research shows that consistently working more than 40 hours a week is simply unproductive.”

But he wants it NOW!

I srsly just want to get the fk out of my parents house , and get out of this stupid small town, the place is like death. I just want to get some kind of job that pays enough money for me to live in a bad apartment somewhere and pay for basic stuff.

When i move , all im taking with me is clothing , a laptop and some of the exercise gadgets i have bought .

Two things i know i lack are:

1.visualization…and
2.seeing into the future.

I was reading this book ‘Think and grow rich’ and the guy kept hammering the point home about “Burning Desire” and how ‘something needs to be created in your mind before it becomes reality.’

Im just extremely shtty about the whole vision quest thing, i dont have a burning desire for anything. My goals are generally vague and they change . I make sure to drive on the freeway in a manner which allows traffic to flow smoothly because other people have more important agendas than myself.

This is stupid but i read my horoscope one time out of this book and it said that my hobbies are going to always be more important than my work , work will just be something i do in order to pay for what i do outside of work.

It also said i was repressed, such as lacking a burning desire to assert my will and ideas.

When i was driving home from a job one time i wondered what it would be like to experience someone elses brain, such as you artificially swap brains and you become them, experiencing how they think.

We probably arent THAT different, but how would you know for sure ?

The corporation that I work for has a tendency to pay people stupid amounts of money. It works though as our staff turnover is retard low. I.e. you are surprised to meet someone who hasn’t been there for at least 10 years. It can be a bit of a circus at times but in saying THAT despite the sink or swim situations where you are pretty much on your damn own, you get pretty damn good support from the big wigs when you don’t drown.

You look after them, they very much look after you. When they sniff talent, bet your ass you are looking at a pay increase and more opportunities. Talent also =/= degrees. We have plenty of top dogs without so much as even a bachelor degree flying the flag above their more educated counterparts.

We were told we can stay for as many 10 week rotations as we choose, however to take advantage of the tax free benefit we must stay 2 rotations without leaving the country - 8 weeks on, 2 off, 8 on, 2 off

There really aren’t any issues when we are sent overseas. We stay amongst our own corporate people (engineers, corporate management, HR, etc.) with local employees who take care of our VISA, amenities, etc. as required.

He can have the autonomy and relatedness at 7-11, he won’t be happy unless he’s challenged and appreciated at his job though.
