White-Tailed Deer Budget Hunting Rifle?

Whelp, the Cabela’s hunting special ad just came to my doorstep and I’ve now got my eyes on a Save Axis II XP Bolt-Action Rifle Combo

The price is absolutely right, and ya’ll have me sold on Savage (which, thanks so much for that). I like that it comes with optics, and the little bit of reading I’ve done on it seems like it answers the mail. Any red flags here I’m missing?

Oh i remember. Freedom group ruined everything they touched. I grew up about an hour and a half from the ilion, ny plant. When it was time to get my first rifle and shotgun all my uncles were telling me to buy a remington. In their minds for good reason because of the quality guns they had bought over the years. But by that time they were coasting on reputation and the quality was gone.

The saddest to me was marlin. The first gun i ever fired was a friends model 60. Plinking for hours. Freedom group/remington destroyed the marlin name. Thankfully, ruger has revived it to an extent.

Nope. I had virtually the same rifle in .243, minus the trigger adjustment & safety thing for about 20 years. Very sturdy, reliable piece.

Now just get dialed in and ready to cook up some venison! :+1:

Yeah it legitimately hurt my feelings when they fucked up Marlin.

This will get the job done. Nice thing about synthetic stocks is you don’t have to worry about humidity/temperature changes expanding/contracting the stock and slightly moving your barrel (if it’s not free floating).
The AccuTrigger and factory scope are nice touches. Should be plenty powerful to sight in at 100 yards and allow shots from 25-250 yards if you know how to compensate.

Really appreciate the feedback there @cyclonengineer and @SkyzykS . I’m really excited to bring this home in August.

I had that exact same rifle, minus the accutrigger, in .22-250. Unfortunately it got stolen a few years ago. What caliber are you planning to get?

Henry is my go to for levers now.
My dad has a Marlin lever in .35 Remmington which is a great gun, but ammo for it is getting really hard to find.

I’ll have to see what they can offer me, but .270 is seeming like a good choice. What would you lean toward if you were purchasing it?

I think the .270 is an excellent choice. It’s plenty big enough to use on large game(such as elk) if you ever get the chance, without being overkill for whitetail. It’s also extremely common so ammo availability shouldn’t be an issue regardless of where you find yourself.

@Friscokid Love it! You get the package with the optics?

@antimadder Really appreciate that. Community has been awesome here walking me through.

I did. I ran those optics for a year or so. Then upgraded to some vortex glass and had some trigger work done. Its been an absolute great rifle .243 cal

Great advise. I have three and have used them since I was a teenager. All you need,

moderate recoil, flat shooting, accurate and ammo is sold about everywhere

@Friscokid Appreciate that. So good to hear the experiences. I should be able to pick it up next week.

@idaho Your opinion holds a lot of weight: really appreciate you weighing in.

Once again, big thanks to the community here. I went to Cabela’s today to buy my new rifle…and they were sold out! BUT, they WERE able to ship to store from another location if I so chose, and were it not for all the information I had received here I most likely would have not pursued purchasing it sight unseen. But I have enough confidence that I’ll be getting a quality product. With various discounts, it was just a little over $430 out the door, and that’s WITH optics installed. I cannot wait for it to arrive. I feel like Ralphie on Christmas morning waiting for my Red Rider.

I’ll post some photos when it’s all said and done. Thanks once again to this community: ya’ll rock!
