Why is it that a protein shake with fruit, mainly whey and banana, is recommended PWO? Wouldn’t the fructose mainly just restore liver glycogen and it would be better to have something with glucose or sucrose?
I personally say remove the actual Fruits, in favor of removing the Fiber and using Fruit Juice instead.
As for the second part of your question; either is fine.
In the end, you really just need something to magnify your insulin levels.
Maltrodextrin…
White Bread.
Etc, etc.
one medium banana has 6 grams of fructose and glucose each and 3 grams of sucrose, still sounds good to me
I’ve been experimenting with whey plus pineapple juice before and after training, and for me this is the ultimate for muscle recovry. - maybe because of the anti-inflammatory action. It goes against the conventional thoughts regarding dextrose/malto - but seeing as glycogen storage is inhibited after muscle damage, I’ve always wondered the importance of this.

cyph31 nails it, fructose is not the only type of sugar contained within fruit.
FWIW - many people do not recommend fruit PWO as you can see in this thread.
Fruit is a terrible choice post workout.
Waxy Maize Starch > Maltodextrin > Dextrose
from best and down
Really, so having apples/oranges (not the juice) PWO is not ideal?
But Pumped340, if that’s you in your avatar, just keep doing what you;ve been doing hahaha
Fruit and whey is better than nothing.
I use fruit to great avail before and after a work out. The natural choice, ie fruit > maltodextrin, is always a better choice in my opinion.
Banana’s are especially good because of the potassium. Potassium helps to neutralize lactic acid build up. Just a thought…

why would you think fruit is bad?
and wtf is waxy maize starch? lol never heard of it

well because of the sucrose:glucose:fructose ratio mentioned above that banana’s have it would be a better choice than apples
Because they replenish liver glycogen when we want muscle glycogen replenished!!
And do some research on waxy maize, just about everyone with some knowledge on nutrition uses it nowadays.
Honestly, I have been using whey and grape juice PWO for a while now, and it’s working just as good if not better than the fancy PWO dectrose powders I used to use.
Unless you are already 250lb elite who is very sensitive to the specific ratios of sugars, proteins and acids of PWO drinks, I think getting any more detailed than Whey+Sugar+perhaps some BCAAs is minutia and in the long run probably wont make much of a deal. The point is to get some fast digesting protein and carbs after your workout.

i agree with the first sentence… but why waxy maize over malto and dextrose?

i doubt that, i’ve talked to a lot of people with knowledge of nutrition and i’d say by far the most common PWO drink is whey+fruit. i’m not saying waxy maize is bad since idk what it is but it’s not that common

A slight exaggeration? Most definitely.
Granted, waxy maize has gained limited popularity, but most knowledgable people don’t use it.

It’s molecular weight is way higher than the others, so it goes through your stomach much faster and shuttles nutritients more rapidly into your muscles, leaving you with no bloating or crash like dextrose would.
