My understanding is that librarians were uncomfortable with some of the images (slant-eyed Chinamen with straw hats, monkey-looking black people) and Seuss’ publishing house, after looking into options, decided to pull six titles to protect his legacy. What’s interesting to me is that I and my kids were big Seuss consumers, and I’ve only read one of the books (Mulberry St.). The others seem very obscure to me. And yet people are screaming like Cat in the Hat has been stolen away for no reason. I’d be curious how many of the screamers have read any of the pulled books.
I also read this week, as an aside, that Roald Dahl redrew the Oompa Loompa characters in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in the early 70’s in response to negative feedback. They were originally black pigmies from Africa, of all the crazy things.
The world changes. Once being fat was a sign of wealth, now it’s the opposite. It’s hard for me to understand why people get so worked up.

I always thought the Sexy Wives and Girlfriends thread was a liability since not all of the wives and GFs knew they were being posted. I’ve spent the years since seeing it urging young women to never ever allow themselves to be photographed by someone else, and if they choose to send nudes, make sure to keep faces out.
