What Would Reagan Have Done?
WMD wrote:
So all those people dying of AIDS and it’s related diseases in Africa aren’t really there? Or is it that they are not us and therefore don’t count as far as an epidemic or crisis?

Just wondering…
I was speaking in terms of a crisis in the US. And yes, our own people and our own problems ought to come before those of another country.
WMD wrote:
The Bush administration has told any country desiring American money to fight their AIDS non-crisis that they cannot distribute condoms as part of their programs.
And… who cares? Sorry, not our problem. I don’t agree with the principle (of not allowing condoms to be distributed), but I really am not too upset about whatever money is or is not being sent to Africa. African countries have willfully resisted AIDS education for years, and have refused to use condoms when provided.

Where did I mention anything about the status of women in African countries? Why would we want to fund countries that practice genital mutilations, by the way? Plenty of food and money? Well, they might be a little better off if the regimes weren’t so thoroughly corrupt that humanitarian aid can’t even reach the people.
Africa is just a pecuniary black-hole. WMD, you seem to think that the solution to these problems is just to give, give, give. Well, feel free to give out of your paycheck.

As for me, I’d like to stay out of fights that I know are unwinnable… and that’s what virtually all African politics seems to be.

What does everyones favorite religion have to say about picking and choosing who to help and who not to help?

What line on a map turns normal good people into those that deserve to die because they aren’t my people?

No, don’t tell me, I really would never want to see that line…

Is that the religion of RAman?

I think deserve is a strong word, but hey I didn’t use it. I had not really educated myself on the Aids problem in Africa, until I read a book called the dream giver.

I think most people get so hung up on what is going on in their own country, that you tend to turn a blind eye toward many other issues. It is also very overwhelming to know all of the issues that are going on around the world.

This will be a tough thing to say without it being taken wrong, but here it goes.

Aids was in my opinion a decision that most people had control over similiar to choosing to drive a car that and risk getting killed in an accident.

When I read that book I begin to see the impact on the orphaned children in Africa, and that is what in many was a changing point in my life towards the Aids problem.

I hope that came across well on my change of opinion.

You’re right, vroom. We should pump endless amounts of money into a problem that doesn’t seem to have a solution, putting it into the hands of corrupt governments who skim off the top, and all for a population that doesn’t seem to really want the problem solved if it would, like, take work on their parts.

Vroom,My son was just up in Georgian Bay enjoyed the country and hopitality he was givin by your fellow canadians.Said he was treated much nicer than a lot of places hes been to down here in the U.S.

From an old guy who, as a child, had to practice diving under his desk because of bomb-drills:

“Mr. Gorbachev, tear DOWN this wall!”
— Ronald Wilson Reagan

It deserved to be said twice!

Wow. The actor read a line someone wrote for him. LET’S PUT HIM ON THE DIME!

Reagan was the main reason for the collapse of the USSR, that’s a cold hard fact.

The Military build up, SDI, support for the Contras, The government in El Salvador, The Invasion of Grenada, support for the rebels in Afghanistan, and publicly calling them what they were an evil empire.

At every turn, Reagan was there to give the shaft to the Soviets.

Lot’s of other players, both Republican and Democrat, but no liberals played in our efforts to end the USSR. with out those efforts, the Russians would have been kept under the yoke.

What would Reagan do now?
9-12-01 The nation would have been mobilized, he would have called out to every man with a pare of balls, that can serve to serve. He would have put the entire Middle East on notice, and we would have invaded most of the area, not just Iraq and Afghanistan.

The war on Terrorism would have taken a WW2 feel, with WW2 results.

Fallujah would have been leveled by B-52 strikes.

We would be sucking oil out of conquered territories and our domestic gas prices would be about $1.05 a gallon.

When Reagan got angry, the world took notice. Ask Qaddafi what happens when you defy Reagan?
I wish he was still here, running things.

Okay, let’s suppose that someone else wrote that line. Who had the final call for saying the line to the whole world? Do you know that many on his staff wanted him to NOT say the line, so as not to offend the Soviets?

You don’t even deserve to be ‘on his staff’, if you get my meaning.

I don’t get your meaning. Was it a euphamism? Does staff mean penis? If so, are you saying that Reagan liked men on his penis?

Rainjack,I think alot of people didnt care that much for Gore either,I think it is just the way the past two elactions have been handled,it makes a lot of Americans wonder if this is a trend that is going 2 continue into the future, its like we are supposed to be the most honorable nation and the whole deal seems like a big cluster f**k.Most other countries would have had a revolt if things of this nature were handled this way.

This is just my opinion, and I’m sure it will get refuted, but I think the last 2 Pres. elections were turning points. Particularly in 2000. Since that time Republicans have won more and more elections by wider and wider margins.

2004 showed Bush winning convincingly. Not by a wide margin, but when compared to 2000 - it was a landslide.

2008 will be even bigger for the right. It may not last as long as the left’s strangle-hold on the power, but I don;t think you will see the dems do very much on the national scene as a party for quite a while.
Well…I hate to go over this again…but he didn’t win in 2000. And the vote was very close in 2004, as far as percentages go. And Bush’s poll numbers are lower than ever. It aint lookin bright for the right.

That is the theme song for the ABB crowd. Bush did win. He won the electoral college. That is the way we select our presidents. The popular vote means dick.

That’s like bragging that your team won because they got more first downs and more total yards, but wound up on the short side of a 17-14 final. Go ahead if it makes you feel better, but it doesn’t change reality.

Please compre his numbers to the Dems numbers. Republicans are still ahead of the left, regardless what the popularity contest polls show. Bush has never given a shit about popular opinion. I doubt he’ll start anytime soon.

Don’t believe me? Come back in a year and 2 months and lets compare score cards. I’ll wager 2 tubs of Grow that my side will have more seats in congress than they do right now.

LOL it’s a joke from a television show called ‘family guy.’
haney wrote:

The economy suffered for several reasons, many of them being inherited problems from his predecessor.

Let me see if I understand this line of reasoning. I’m taking some of this from previous posts on different threads by different posters, not all from this one post.

The economy during Reagan’s years was fucked because of his predecessor. Then Clinton enjoyed the benefit of a strong economy because of his predecessor. Now the economy is suffering during Bush’s presidency because of Clinton? And you guys accuse the liberals of playing the blame game.
