Even if he had $5000 cash and did not report it how could the IRS possibly find out?
He put it in writing on the internet. That is why I originally brought it up. In all likelihood it wouldn’t be found even if he was audited, which is also unlikely.
The IRS is not going to come after someone for a measily $5k, and not one IRS agent is going to search this forum to prove a claim of tax fraud. It’s too small an amount for their time. The IRS go after people who avoid paying millions.

I’m just saying that it was put in writing and is out there for anyone to see. If it isn’t claimed and is discovered it is tax evasion.
The IRS came after me for 5k plus interest due to their mistake no evasion/avoidance took place. My 2’s look like 7’s and processor didn’t check the W-2. I appealed and got fined for late payment. Fines and interest were near 6k.

IRS sent me a letter a few years ago, stating that I had not filed my federal taxes, when I actually did. They threatened with fines and interest, but I sent a very sincere letter of grievance, along with a copy of the forms I had filed, and miraculously they relented and dropped all charges.

But, they do not know this money exists. Yours was an error in the paperwork.

That’s a raw deal, especially since the mistake was theirs.
I’d like to thank everyone for their advice and info.
As fate would have it I was driving down the road today and noticed that my car was basically shaking anytime I’d go over 40, subsequently my check engine light came on somewhere around the same time.
Looks like a good amount of the money will be going to new struts and something with the muffler/catalytic converter.
next weekend is shaping up to be similar to the last so I’ll still have some money to do something with.
Also, I was completely joking about reporting anything to the IRS. Fuck them, they can come find me
No he shouldn’t. You are encouraging tax fraud, which is irresponsible at best.
I understand what you’re saying, usmc. On the other hand “tax fraud” led to the American Revolution and the overthrow of tyranny and it was a whole lot less tyranny than what we frogs feel now. A. Whole. Lot. Less.
If only enough of us frogs jumped out of the pot today another thoroughly appropriate revolution could take place once again.
Sign me up when you get enough frogs together. I’d prefer not to sit in the pond all by myself.
